Easy extract (from a can/kit) Stout recipe for n00b

OK. I found an interesting one that looks doable for my level. It's https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f68/boondock-irish-stout-96675/ but I'm wondering about the ingredients list. For example, when they say (grains) 0.5 LBS Carmel/Crystal Malt 80L and 0.33 LBS Flaked Barley ... would I reduce...

Easy extract (from a can/kit) Stout recipe for n00b

Hello, I am a n00b. I have only brewed 4 batches so far. 3 from "canned" kits (extract only?) and one from a local homebrew that was excellent and didn't require mashing/smashing, meshing, or whatever. I'd like to make an oatmeal/chocolate/sweet/whatever Stout next. But, i'd like to make it...

    Sanitizer Question....

Anyone know about the use of these kinds of Iodine as a sanitizer??

When to go from Primary to Secondary (If at all)

I have read the longer you leave your original wort in the fermenter the longer higher the chance of infection! So, it would seem to me leaving the original wort in the fermenter for 3 months would have a extremely high chance for bacteria infection!

When to go from Primary to Secondary (If at all)

How is a brewer supposed to know when the fermentation is over? I'm using a kit and it recommended 5-7 days. I checked the hydrometer on day 7 and it was 1.014. This batch has been bottled now. Is this the right gravity to bottle at? How can I be certain fermentation is done (so I can bottle)...

Fermentation can take 24 to 72 hrs to show visible signs.

If we have a single-stage beer (i.e., from a kit and don't need to transfer it to a secondary) what is the best way to make sure fermentation is done? Several people say to check the hydrometer but how do I know what the gravity should be at? My original gravity was 1040 and I bottled this at...

    Sanitizer Question....

So do people know what is the difference between something which is 1% iodine Wound Spray, 10% Providone Iodine, or 2% Tincture Iodine?? Is any of this poisonous (as the bottles all say For External Use Only) if used as a fermenter sanitzer?? Are these mixtures no-rinse?

    Iodine sanitizer?

This post (https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/sanitizing-question-90109/#post971810) says to mix 1T white vinegar + 5 gallons water + 1T bleach as a no-rinse sanitizer. Seems vinegar + bleach can be deadly....... but separately, in the same fermenter, they are OK?! Anyway, has...

    Sanitizer Question....

If you use something like the above Iodine, do you mix it with water? How much? Can you just pour it directly into a spray bottle and spray your fermentor and consider it "sanitized"? Also, I don't have access to Iodine like that but our Walgreens sells Betadine (Betadine Solution | H |...

    Iodine sanitizer?

Pardon my ignorance, but I have read several people suggest that household bleach is not no-rinse (if it is @ this concentration then great!) and that the homebrewer should avoid it unless it's super-rinsed several times. If I am to use 2T/1oz of bleach in 4 gallons of water, can I just let...

    Iodine sanitizer?

Hello, I tried to search on this thru the forum search option but I didn't find anything. Please excuse the n00b-ness of this question as I'm still getting started. Anyway, where I live we do not have a home brew store, but there is one about 2 hours driving distance away -- I am also...

    Yeasties and weak/no fermentation

Hello. I read the sticky at the top of the forum page but it contains extremely contradictory advise. Several posts say fermentation needs to start BEFORE 12 hours (that is, there should be visible sighs!) while several other posts says no, no, WAIT 72 HOURS. WTF?! As a n00b, I am not sure...

    Chill

    K. Thanks all for the replies. I like the idea of keeping the stir-spoon and thermometer in the pot -- which is something I hadn't thought about.

    Chill

Yeah, that's what I was referring to in my very first post... that what I am reading says to KEEP THE TOP ON THE WORT-POT while you are chilling it. John Palmer's book says to do this in the introduction. However, several people previously posted to keep the top off...?!?!? So .... I keep the...

    Chill

OK. So, while I am chilling the wort I keep the lid off.... Got it. Then, just use a cleaned (sanitized?) thermometer to keep checking the temperature?

    Chill

Hi, thanks for the replies. So .... everything I have been reading about says you have to keep the lid on the wort-pot in order to prevent/minimize bacteria infection. Is it safe to take off the lid for a few minutes while I check the wort temperature to see if it is close to pitching...

    Chill

Hello, I tried to search on this topic but it seems I wasn't able to find anything. I am a total newb at brewing and intend to use the Coopers micro kit. Anyway, I'm wondering about the best way to chill the wort? If I use an ice bath, typically how long and how much ice should I use? For...
