Time to switch gears a bit

Hmmm. Although Orfy's Hobgoblin recipe looks real intriguing, I'm thinking either an Alt, a Kolsch or a California Common. Anyone have a good AG altbier recipe?

Time to switch gears a bit

My last 4 or 5 batches have all been pretty similar beers, EdWort's Haus Pale (X2), Vail Pale Ale (X2) an Ahtanum IPA. Basically pale ales with lots of Cascade/Centennial hoppiness. I think it's time to switch gears a bit and do something different, but I don't know what. First off, I don't...

    Equipping to start AG brewing

You're off to a good start. As others have said, though, get the wort chiller ASAP. It will make a huge difference in the quality of your brews.

How long to age an Oktoberfest?

My second batch ever, an Oktoberfest style ale, extract with steeping grains, was one of the best batches I've made to this day. I bought a sixer of some real German stuff and had SWMBO do a blind taste test. She said that mine tasted almost identical to the commercial stuff, only fresher...

    A lotta beer...

Well, you could ask for them back. Or... what better excuse to have to go out and buy some beer so you can drink it for the bottles? Lots of folks just give them back, though.

    It's a sad day...

I feel for ya, Yuri. Moving is very un-fun. Just wait until you get to be my age and you'll really know what I mean. As for brewing, have you considered doing it more simply for awhile? I don't know about your homebrewing experience, but I remember a couple of years ago when I first started...

    A lotta beer...

Based on photos others have posted of their homebrew "stash," I know I'm probably in the minor leagues when it comes to my inventory, but I was just doing a little calculating and I realized that I currently have enough beer made that I could have one beer a day for a an entire year before I...

    Re-using dry yeast

I went ahead and did it. My yeast cake was from an Ahtanum IPA which used Safale US-05. I made a slightly modified EdWort's Haus Pale today and put it right on top. I started getting bubbles from my blow-off tube within 30 minutes. Four hours later it's going like gangbusters.

    Re-using dry yeast

I remember reading in a brewing book where the authors claimed that it's not good to re-use dry yeast. Is there anything to that? I've got a fresh yeast cake in my primary today and I'd like to just put a new batch right on top of it. I used Safale 56 (or whatever they're calling it now). The...

    DIY Sausage

Pete, hope your brats turn out good. Just curious, though-- are you a recent transplant to Australia? If so, what brought you there, and where did you live before?

    Evan

When I was in 1st grade, 5 of us out of about 30 students in my classroom were named Mark. On Saturday mornings in religion class, 6 of us were Marks. Funny thing, though, now that I'm almost 50 I don't seem to run into many Marks my age-- or even any age, for that matter.

    Hops

Judging from the pictures on their online menu I wouldn't want to eat anything other than a burger or some appetizers there. Sounds as though their beer might be decent, though.

You'd think I'd scored some great weed...

You know, you're right! They are the only two members of the same plant family. No wonder they smell so good. :drunk:

    Who is Smashed Right Now?

Well, considering that it's New Year's Eve, I expect a lot of folks are smashed right now. SWMBO and I have decided to stay home tonight. I've never been big on celebrating New Year's. At the Irish bar I used to go to years ago, they always said that New Year's was for amateurs and they closed...

Might have to buy some BMC tonight...

I had a Miller Lite with lunch today. I actually like it a lot and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I think the key is to not compare BMC to homebrew or microbrews. They're so different it's like comparing apples and oranges.

    Forgotten Fast Food Favorites?

Wow, thank you for thinking of that. I was beginning to think it was just me and that my tastebuds had changed over time. Mc D's Quarter Pounders do taste different nowadays, and much for the worse if you ask me. I don't know how the cook their stuff these days, but did you ever notice that when...

    Forgotten Fast Food Favorites?

For me it was Orange Crush and Orange vodka. Had to play in the marching band at a football game the next day. Almost didn't make it. Man, was I ever in bad shape that day!

    Making chicken stock

Hmmm. The interesting thing about his recipe is that he says to simmer it for 6-8 hours. Most recipes I've seen call for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

    Forgotten Fast Food Favorites?

Not really fast food, technically, but I really miss the Big Boy hamburger. We don't have any more Big Boy's in Wisconsin. The last one I had was 5 years ago in Mackinaw City, Michigan. Do they still have Elias Bros. Big Boys in Michigan? Anyway, the Big Boy hamburger is a double decker similar...

Brewing with Yuri - Video series!

Yuri, it was fascinating to watch your brew session and see all your gear in action. I must confess that my setup is quite a bit different (read simpler), but the process pretty much remains the same. Thank you for sharing this with us. p.s. One thing I think I could find a lot of use for is...
