Priming Sugar - How much to use?

Don't worry about it too much. Just keep the bottles in an empty cardboard case. If you get a bottle bomb (or if the first couple of open bottles are gushers), you can move them into the fridge and that will put the yeast to sleep and keep more from 'sploding. Of course, there are other...

    Sierra Nevada Torpedo

I'm drinking SN Torpedo right now after shoveling my driveway all afternoon. Such a great beer. Hop bomb, but worth the attack when you get to the finish. I'm hoping that the IPA I have bottled in my basement is similar. (still green though--only bottled 7 days ago) Cheers!

    Sanitizing Bottles

To be sure, I would run them through the dishwasher again an hour or so before you actually bottle. I'm always paranoid that dust and bacteria may have fallen into the bottles if they're stored upright. My rule of thumb is: clean the bottles little by little (as I drink them), and then...

    First time Brew fermenting question

No, it's fine to leave all that stuff in there. In time, the yeast will settle out to the bottom of the carboy, and eventually the beer will clarify and all the sediment will be on the bottom, too. So when you rack the beer off to the bottling bucket (assuming you're bottling), you can just...

    First time Brew fermenting question

Bubbling and the thick head you speak of--called krausen--are both signs of active fermentation. 5-6 hours? That's awesome! You're doing great! Don't worry about it. Separating the wort from the trub is a tricky tricky thing, cause once the wort is cooled, you are very suseptable to...

Please explain- adding DME late in boil?...

I just heard about this on a podcast the other day. They were saying that it's a good thing to do when doing a partial boil, so that you get better (and closer to intended) hop utilization. Then you put in the remaining DME with about 15 min to go just to sanitize and get a homogenous mixture...

how to hook up an not get beer everywhere....

After that keg gets floated and you disassemble, take a look at how long the gas side diptube is. If it's any longer than an inch, you can shorten it and that will minimize the chances of an overfill. Every once in a while, you see someone wigging out because beer migrated from one keg to...

What are some of your tricks that have not been discussed?

Awesome. I need to check that out. I don't understand what that is... That's a great trick -- I need to look into that, too. This one scares me. I don't know why.. just scared of some crazy infection getting in. Maybe it's because I never really clean and sanitize my MLT. I only rinse...

Good heater for small fermentation chamber?

The ceramic heating element is what I'm about to do in mine. I'm also going to install a small fan in the corner just to keep the air moving well. You could also use a small space heater, but most would be overkill, IMO. btw, which temp controller are you using?
