10 Gallon Batch, 2 carboys and getting 1 big starter to split evenly

I would say #4 sounds the most reasonable, though for a more scientific process, you may consider stepping up the vial in one flask, then splitting that between two flasks to step up again. I kinda feel like it will be easier to evenly split 1L of starter than a tiny vial.

    yeast in blowoff container

For a top fermenting yeast it is common for some of the yeast to escape through the blow off tube. If you are pitching healthy yeast in a suitable quantity I wouldnt worry too much. How much headspace do you have? You may try shooting for 1 gallon or more if you feel like you are loosing too...

    Headspace and Blowoffs

It really depends on batch size and how volatile the yeast strain you are using will ferment. For 5.5gallons a 6gallon carboy should do alright, though if its a big beer you may want to up the headspace to 1 gallon. For primary fermentation you cant really have too much headspace as it will...

    modify Jaded hydra with camlocks?

If you have the money go for it! I am happy with my immersion chiller having MFL connections which are easy enough for me to connect securely while the copper parts are too hot to touch. That being said, I hate after the fact when Im disassembling my chiller trying to not drop the plastic...

    attn North Carolina homebrewers

Hi Sarah, Welcome to the forums! I am in CLT, NC and was wondering more about what events you are looking for. Are you excluding brewery sanctioned events? I can put you in touch with a couple that owns their own BBQ catering service and may be able to come up with some nifty homebrew ideas...

GFCI giving me a hard time.

Alternatively an issue with the downstream outlet could prevent the GFCI from resetting (which would be proper operation actually) If the outlet wont reset you wont have any luck with that gadget Horseflesh linked to, it operates off of voltage from the outlet to display faults. @garcia I am...

I'm interested in buying a stir bar for the first time

For my setup (link in my signature) the best two were 1" long and 5/8" long. probably the middle two in the six pack I bought. I bought this six pack because I was unhappy with the stir bar I from the LHBS with a friction ridge that created a rattle. These six were marginally more expensive...

    Infected batch?

I brewed/pitched on 7/28 and bottled on 8/16 20 days there. Its possible that this batch hadnt fully attenuated, but I dont have any data to confirm/deny. I was hoping that maybe the streaks on the neck would look familiar to someone as I hadnt seen/noticed them on the first 11 batches I...

    Infected batch?

Also Im reasonably sure that this batch all the bottles got PBW'd and power drill scrubbed before sanitizing, so I dont think that dirty bottles are the cause, though I may be wrong.

    Infected batch?

I made a batch of Yooper's Pale ale following the recipe to a T. Unfortunately I must have been somewhat inebriated on bottling day because out of 12 batches bottled so far its the ONE that I did not make any notes on bottling day. The issue is that past he first bottle (opened ~10 days...

    GFCI Breakers

While neutral and ground are bonded at some point they should only be bonded at one point. Grounded appliances are typically have their chassis bonded to ground and in your scenario that is also neutral. If there is any issue with the neutral leg you have a hot leg with no where to go but...

    GFCI Breakers

Im not sure what this "trick" is, but if you are suggesting that you can convert two hots and a neutral to two hots a neutral and a ground you are grossly mistaken and that is very dangerous.

Camera lens for taking really good MACRO shots?

http://expertphotography.com/how-to-hold-a-camera/ That has some decent options regarding proper camera control. Also you might consider beginner photography classes as you can pour all your money into a hobby, but if you don't know how to use your gear or have realistic expectations for it you...

Camera lens for taking really good MACRO shots?

The VR is a nice feature, it more or less let's you shoot a stop or two smaller without a tripod... sorta. It works well while tracking a moving subject or if you are moving. If your wife always has camera shake issues it might be better to research proper holding techniques to make sure that...

    Bottle gushers...

I do think I have a wand like that, but I didn't like the spring. It takes more pressure to fill and I felt it was at a much slower rate.

    Bottle gushers...

I always take the spigot off my bottling bucket for cleaning and storage between batches, also... I feel stupid for asking this, how do you take apart the bottling wand? Mine seems like the plastic tip is glued on..

Camera lens for taking really good MACRO shots?

It really sounds like you have a light problem not a camera body issue per-se. You can have all the pixels and ISO in the world, but without light entering the lens you are fighting a losing battle. For ballroom/event photography there is a reason to use a professional and that's because they...
