    Diy stir plate issue

If you can post a photo of your setup we may be able to offer better advice.. I agree with whats already been said, adding a flask increases the distance between stir bar and magnet, adding water increases resistance to spin (also DME has a different resistance than water) Both of those factors...

    Speakers and stereo equipment

I scored an old pair of JBL 4311's for free in college. I have done some minor repairs and re-screened them and they sound pretty awesome to me!

    A year of SMaSH

My first SMaSH was a MO/Challenger brew that was amazing. The MO I feel almost lends a buttery flavor which I loved! I brewed three batches of that SMaSH experimenting with habanero additions and have ended up with a really drinkable beer. This year I am going to dial down the MO to around...

Making a starter on brew day?

Ive done this before, realized I forgot to make a starter on brew day. I kinda liked pitching the starter at high krausen, It made the batch kick off fermentation within a few hours which was sorta nifty.

    American IPA Fresh Squeezed IPA

I just pulled my first sample, 2 weeks after brewing on the 31st. I used 10g of heavy toasted oak chips soaked in vodka that I racked onto before pitching, and today it was downright heavenly! It was sweet and fruity, almost seemed like I was drinking OJ. I am dry hopping today for a week...

Amazon Echo Dot: What the heck to do with it?

I have the google home, same-ish idea but it integrates with my google eco system at home. I love being able to ask it generically for "music" and it knows me well enough to play something interesting through my stereo. Also its never been easier to spin up something to watch on the chromecast...

    Spent Grain

Dog biscuits are good (presumably, my dog seems to love them at least) The rest goes to either the compost heap or friend's chickens, depending when I see them.

Advice on purchasing/putting together a chest freezer fermentation chamber

Check the DIY forums, there are many many styles of ferm chamber and even options outside of a chamber in which you place a carboy (or bucket). Most rely on the STC/ITC thermostats (~$16-20 on amazon) that will need basic electrical knowledge to wire up (dont worry there are guides and we are...

    DIY Carboy Crate

I havent read anything that leads me to be concerned about light hitting fermenting beverages that do not contain hops. My only anecdotal evidence was my first batch of apfelwein that as an experiment I left purposefully uncovered in my living room ~3' away from a window. That batch tasted...

    DIY Carboy Crate

Milk Crates dont satisfy hardly any of the criteria Im aiming for. Plus those in addition to a few brew haulers is what I am currently using. I want something that looks nice enough to display in my house, and my goal is to stack them vertically which milk crates cannot safely do without...

    Pressure Barrel Re-Pressuring

I would imagine it would leak long before it exploded, but I suppose that also depends on what type of vessel it is. For instance, if it was designed to hold in pressure to carbonate the beer then it should be OK with a bit more, just go slow and stop when you have your serving pressure.

    Pressure Barrel Re-Pressuring

I havent used a pressure barrel, but some searching reveals that the priming sugar is only intended to carb the beer, and you will need CO2 cartridges to dispense. I would just add in short bursts until you can dispense and likely every few pints you will need to add another "shot" of CO2...

    DIY Carboy Crate

Good point, this project stems from a wildly derailed thought chain after I had some flimsy shelves that were the perfect size, but not perfect for 4 carboys, and while thinking of ways to fix those shelves, I stumbled this direction. I will put some thought into shelves, but the one main con...

    RO water profile into Beersmith?

Their filtered water is zero'd out which matches what I believe RO water ideally is. Also, thanks for pointing out that there is a mineral calculator in Beersmith, I have been messing around with spreadsheets and the like and this looks much more convenient.

1/2 Gallon canning jar HOP BACK and RANDALL from Jaybird

@jaybird Small typo on the site I think: " Slightly longer nipple on top of the lid is “liquid out” side." "Liquid exits through the slightly shorter “out” port nipple of the canning jar through the diagonal-cut short dip tube"

    DIY Carboy Crate

So I am moving into having more long term batches than I have ready table space, as with my fermentation chamber I want to go vertical! Also, I want to proudly display batches of apfelwein and the like somewhere not in a closet so these need to look interesting. Ive seen some really cool...

Thoughts on using these to store harvested yeast...

Im not sure what "pharmacy grade" is, I would imagine in the same line as food grade. Does the bottle have any markings on the bottom that may help indicate the type of plastic used?

    Transporting compressed gases

All tanks of gases are designed for transportation. Make sure all extraneous stuff is detached (regulators and the like) Ensure that they are all closed properly You never want a gas tank in an enclosed space with the driver (CO2 primarily because it doesnt have a scent) Like the others said...

    Adding liquor to alt beer???

For starters it would be a little more alcoholic! I soaked some stave shavings in gentleman jack for a secondary once before and the flavor from both was very present. I would advise adding a little at a time and mixing and tasting along the way. Even better, pull a few pints and add a...
