2ndary Ferment Temp - SoCal fires

I had heat problems on my last brew. I put the carboy in a basin that had some water in it, covered the carboy with a tee shirt and let the bottom of the shirt sit in the water a little (just touching it). I then wet the shirt down and left it to continue soaking water from the basin on its own...

    Hot break

I was just curious about the lack of a hot break on my last brew and if the late addition extract may have had anything to do with it. What you said about extract having already been boiled made sense to me though... the way I interpreted it. I thought you meant that, in an AG you would...

    Duh!:o Makes sense...thanks

    Hot break

I was reading a post in the beginners section and didn't want to hijack the thread, but I have a related question. The poster said he only heated his wort to what sounded like a simmer and never came close to a boil over. He was told in the replies that if it didn't almost boiled over he...

    Just made my first batch...

I don't use boiled water, I use store bought bottled water. I think there are those that use tap. As far as dumping trub into the fermenter I have heard this before and after doing 4 brews thus far haven't come across "trub" in my wort:confused: My wort is usually clean and my last one...

    Failing Fermentation

Is the airlock/stopper or lid (if you use a bucket) tighly sealed?

Smack pack for first time brewer

I use smack packs and just let them sit for a few hours, pitched and have had lag times of 6-10 hours averaging around 7

First time, but it needs to be an Oatmeal Stout..

I made a nice Oatmeal stout using steeped grain/extract. 1 week primary, 2 weeks in secondary and 3 weeks in bottles....done!

    first time troubles

I posted a similar post on my first brew. I brewed, pitched my yeast and in 2 days my airlock stopped bubbling completely. The good people here advised me that all was well and so I left in in primary for 2 weeks. I bottled and all was well. ;)

    Racking canes and oxidation

I was just reading an article on racking/bottling and realized something I've done on the 4 brews I've made thus far. I was reading about purging air from the hose/racking cane before siphoning. I didn't know this and have always just placed the cane in my carboy with the other end in my...

    Never Had Krausen

Thanks for the repy. Yes, it is a workout!!:D

    Never Had Krausen

This really has nothing to do with the original question but rather just my own curiosity. That seems like an awful lot to aerate, couldn't you just put the lid on the bucket and shake the whole thing ? That is how I aerate. I pick the whole carboy up, cover the mouth and shake it vigorously for...

    Converting Partial Boils to Full

I was recently told by a brewer that you need at least some extract or you won't get anything from the hops. Pure water won't do anything. Is that true? It didn't seem to make sense.

    Dry Hopping

I added my hops this morning. I sanitized a muslin bag, some fishing line and a couple of marbles and in she went. I guess two marbles wasn't enough because it's floating. I noticed that my airlock is bubbling about once every 30 seconds or so. I suppose the hops cause a little gas?

    Dry Hopping

Good Idea....those I have plenty of!! Thanks

    Dry Hopping

    That's kind of what I was thinking. So you're anal too?:D :D

    Dry Hopping

I'm getting ready to dry hop and have a muslin bag a couple of marbles and my hops. The only thing I am stuck on...which seems silly actually....is the cord or what to use to suspend it. What is most common? A white shoelace, a piece of string....any string? Any special string? Fishing line...

    Ipa

No these won't work. I am assuming you mean those orange ones? I see they now have new ones with measurements on them ( white buckets) but I don't think these are food grade either. You need food grade buckets; like the fermenter.

    Transfer to secondary

When the liquid gets low and the siphoning slows can't you give the siphon another pump? That's what I have been doing to get it started again.

    Thanks again
