Whiskey Soaked Oak cubes and a Stout

The secret lies within the pythagorean theorem! Whiskey^2 + Oak^2 = Delicious^2 I added 4 oz oak to a pint jar as you did. I have occasionally had a glass or two of the whiskey and, while oaky, it is delicious. I think adding some oak to any bottle of whiskey may be a good thing, but I digress...

Whiskey Soaked Oak cubes and a Stout

What is the volume of your batch? The whiskey in the jar will be SUPER oaky. I opted to just add the cubes and add more whiskey later to taste. I don't think there is any benefit of aging the beer with the whiskey vs. adding it at bottling...

    Overpitching?

I think maybe your answer lies in your fermentables. As in, you ended up with not many unfermentable sugars in that wort and your high attenuating yeasts went to town on it. What temperature did you steep that grains at? I've never done the partial-boil with steeping grains method. My instinct...

    2nd Attempt at brewing Question

*steps onto soap box* Just to be clear, there is NO POSSIBILITY that the yeast were killed from being introduced to or kept in 90 deg wort. Unless we're talking in celsius here :mug: In fact, most yeasts experience maximum growth in the temperature range of 86 to 95 deg F. Of course, there are...

    2nd Attempt at brewing Question

My understanding is the yeast have issues at 120 deg and die at 140 deg. Your temp isn't ideal and will get you a lot of fruity ester production from those yeasts, but no Fail here. The Yeast will diffuse just fine without agitation. Aeration is good pre-fermention. There's a boogeyman named...

Whiskey Soaked Oak cubes and a Stout

As Sebas83 mentioned, there doesn't seem to be a lot of quantifiable data for oaking so your best bet is probably do what your taste buds tell you. I have 3 gallons of Founder's Breakfast Stout Clone sitting on 1 oz. of Hungarian Oak Cubes (I soaked the cubes in Woodford Reserve Bourbon for 2...

    TN/Northern GA/Southern KY - Hop Buy

volsfan, that sounds like a plan! I intend to start a 10 day dry hop the week after xmas so mine should be ready after a force carb early January. I'm thinking the hop buy could turn into a mexican standoff! I'll go first and drop a couple of mine to 0.5 pound that are just over the mark...

    TN/Northern GA/Southern KY - Hop Buy

Just wanted to update - I drank the Sorachi Saison over the weekend and thought it was terrific. I think my next brew will be a play off of the BYO recipe but add in a little Motueka and Citra hops flavor. For my Gumballhead-ish brew I went with Falconer's Flight at 60 & 5, Sorachi @ 20,10,0...

    The Misfits Of Brewing Science

I'm a little perplexed - I picked up a growler of Calfkiller "Grassroots IPA" yesterday at Midtown in Nashville. Has anyone else had this? I get no hop flavor or aroma so I'm a little confused. Appearance is cloudy with little to no head retention and maybe some belgian yeast character...

    Falconer's Flight

I did today! Smells wonderful. Very citrus, as you would expect. I used it in an American Wheat at 60 and 5 with some Amarillo and Sorachi also. Will have to wait a month to comment on the taste though! :mug: I used the 2011 crop. I believe it is the same other than slight changes to the AA.

    Starter vessle for stir plate.

Some men's bars are longer than others.

    Starter vessle for stir plate.

I just built a stir plate and use a one gallon growler with no problem. The bar jiggles a little due to the curved bottom, but not a problem. Still get a good vortex going. I use a 1.625" stir bar. No reason not to give it a shot before purchasing a flask.

    TN/Northern GA/Southern KY - Hop Buy

If you're gonna throw down the grains in kg, you gotta give me those hops in grams!!

    TN/Northern GA/Southern KY - Hop Buy

Thanks for the recipe volsfan. I also have a pound of Falconer's Flight sitting around so maybe I'll do a combo of that, Amarillo and Sorachi. Thanks for the tip on finding the Brooklyn Sorachi, Suho! I swung by and got me a bomber today. It's chilling in the fridge and I'll have to sample...

    TN/Northern GA/Southern KY - Hop Buy

Something clean. I was thinking US-05 or equivalent but I read recently that Three Floyd's uses 1968 ESB in all their beers. I think I'm gonna go with that. I hadn't tried the Gumballhead until the last group grain buy meet-up where someone, I think Volsfan, brought some. It indeed was quite...

    TN/Northern GA/Southern KY - Hop Buy

Nice! I'm gonna be brewing up an American Wheat with Sorachi and Amarillo this weekend. I'm shooting for similar to Three Floyd's Gumbalhead but with the Sorachi kick. From what I've read most people suggest wheat/hefe styles or Saison with Sorachi. The latest BYO has a good looking sorachi...

    TN/Northern GA/Southern KY - Hop Buy

I'm in on a pound (pellet) of Motueka and Warrior. I'm fine with splitting those with someone if interested. I ordered a few pounds from them just a few weeks ago. Great to deal with. They have a "live chat" feature on the homepage that I tried late on a Sunday night, sure enough the owner of...
