    "The Postman"

So, I'm relaxing after brewing tonight, watching "The Postman" on Encore... I don't know why this movie gets such a bad wrap, I rather enjoy it. Maybe I'm just a sucker for post apocalyptic subject matter, but really... Rambo III was on earlier, and I'll be damned if I didn't enjoy that a bit...

    Two Hearted Ale

I personally love Two Hearted, it's probably my favorite IPA. I've got a thing for all centennial IPAs, and it certainly doesn't disappoint; very fragrant, floral, super hoppy flavor with a strong malt back bone... mmmm. On a side note, Bell's takes great pride in their quality control. Their...

    Holy efficiency(?)

I didn't boil off as much as I thought I would, I ended up with closer to 3.75-4g, OG is 1.050, beer smith calculates 75% actual efficiency. I'm still stoked about kegging this one!

    Holy efficiency(?)

Ok, brewing a Dry Stout tonight and according to Beer Smith I hit 90% into the boiler. Three gallon batch, AG 4.5 British 2 Row .50 # Roasted Barley .50 # Flaked Barley .25 # Choclate (.75 oz EKG, S-04 Dry Packet) Mashed @ 1.25 qts/#(ish) @ 154. Mashed w/ 2 gallons of 170 degree...

Diving head first into kegging... what else do I need?

Ok, got my kegging outfit today and of course, I'm thinking that I should have ordered a second keg, but I'm good to go! So of course, I'm celebrating by watchng the Wings game and brewing! My Dry Stout mash will be complete in about 10 minutes and my sparge water is nearly to 180. Woohoo!

    Kegging with primer Question

I'm just getting into kegging ( <--- kegging noob over here), and I haven't primed a keg either, but what I've read is you should purge the keg of oxygen, then hit it with 5 psi just to seal the lid, take it off the gas and you should have naturally carbed beer in 2 weeks or so. Anyone with...

Where to buy a manifold locally?

That is why you would want to make sure it's made of a potable material :)

Where to buy a manifold locally?

A manifold like that is likely assembled from a number of parts, you probably couldn't fine one pre-made at Home Depot, Lowe's, Harbor Freight, etc... If the shop that fills your tank doesn't have anything similar, perhaps your LHBS would. If not, it shouldn't be too hard to put one together...

Diving head first into kegging... what else do I need?

Ok, so, I've finally decided on kegging and I'll be placing an order with Keg Connection soon for their 1 keg basic kit... I'll get the ball lock keg, 5# tank, dual gauge regulator, gas line, beer line w/ cobra tap, new set of o rings and quick disconnects. I'll be brewing around Thanksgiving...

    Bottle carbing

My rule of thumb when bottling is to use 1 oz of corn sugar per gallon, and I generally get fully carbed after 3-4 weeks, depending on the temp in the basement. 4oz for 5 gallons should still yield good results, it may just take longer. Also, at 68 degrees, it may take a little more time for the...

    Beers that need Bottle conditioning?

    Gotcha, very true. :rockin:

    Beers that need Bottle conditioning?

I don't think anyone said that.

    Beers that need Bottle conditioning?

I think the flavors that Palmer is talking about are achieved during the condition period where the beer ferments in the serving vessel and carbs. Adding more sugar to the secondary will just result in more alcohol. I don't think there would be much difference if you bottle conditioned vs...

    Black IPA critique

Ok, thanks for the replies. I re-did this a bit, lowered the IBUs... how's it look? I think the smaller bittering addition should town down on any potential "harshness" and the larger later additions should contribute to more flavour and aroma. I'll likely dry hop with an ounce of Simcoe, but...

    Black IPA critique

I was bored at work today and I dreamed up a little Black IPA extract recipe for my next batch: 5.00 lb Amber Dry Extract (12.5 SRM) 2.00 lb Amber Dry Extract (12.5 SRM) 1.25 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 40L (40.0 SRM) 0.50 lb Carafa II (412.0 SRM) 1.00 oz Simcoe [11.90...

My First Brew! Pics and Video.

Welcome to the hobby... or obsession, which ever you prefer :D Some may say otherwise, but next time, don't worry about straining the hops from the kettle to the carboy, just dump it all in! No harm can come from it. Or, just be really careful when pouring the wort into the carboy and stop when...

    Treating water with campden

Thanks for the great replies. I havent brewed since I noticed the "extra" chlorine in the water, and beers prior to that havent been bad, I just want to know how to treat it "just in case". Thanks again.

    Treating water with campden

So, I've noticed that recently, my tap water is tasting like there's a bit more chlorine in it. So for my next brew (likely an extract batch) I want to try using campden tablets to remove chlorine and chloramines. I've read posts that say campden will help me remove the unwanted substances...

    my chief complaint

I agree with others that some of these people may just be used to BMC fizzy water. Most of the people that I've introduced to craft beer complain that it's too warm and a little flat too... I typically use 3oz/5 gallon batch and end up with acceptable carbonation. Do you think that your beer...

    Question on US-05

I used US-05 in my American Wheat and the krausen built up big time about 24 hours after pitching. I fermented 5g in a 6.5g carboy and the krausen was at the 6g mark and it churned away for about 9 days @ 65degress in my basement. I actually just bottled it yesterday and my sample pint was...
