    Cleaning and Sanitizing Bottles

I think they're called no rinse sanitizers because they don't need rinsed. Just a wild guess.

    is my bucket clean?

Ok. Thanks. I don't mind the smell, just wanted to make sure it wasn't hurting my beer.

    is my bucket clean?

I use a 6.5 gallon fermentation bucket. I clean it well ( I think) after each batch. However, it still smells like beer. Is that a problem? Does that mean it's not as clean as I think it is? I clean It with a soft cloth, hot water and a little bit of dish soap. Sometimes use oxi clean too. Any...

Do they make a mini fridge that holds a 6.5 gallon fermentation bucket?

    Caribou Slobber yeast ?Quest?

Drinking a caribou slobber as I type. Its only my 4 th batch ever and by far my favorite. You guys will love it. 3 weeks primary and 3 weeks in bottle, although it was rather tastey after 10 days in the bottle.

    dry yeast. starter?

Ok.I think I understand. After I have some more experience, i plan on making a big beer, og 1085. Something I can cellar for a while. I assume most people here would urge me to use a wyeast and starter at that time?

    dry yeast. starter?

Thanks guys. This may be an entirely separate thread question, but what are the primary advantages of using wyeast? Is it a flavor advantage or do they attenuate at a higher rate? I'm new and have been enjoying the simplicity of dry yeast. But if there's something I'm missing out on, I'll hop...

    dry yeast. starter?

Recd an extract kit as a gift with some safale05 dry yeast. Its a 5 gallon batch. Can I just pitch it in? Is 1 packet enough for a beer with a 1062 OG? And if dry yeast can simply be pitched, why would anyone ever mess with making a starter? Obvious noob here.

    drinking temp preferences for beer

Agree totally. But only realized that recently. A frosted mug of beer looks awesome but conceals a lot of flavor and aroma.

    drinking temp preferences for beer

Before I started homebrewing (a few months ago), I preferred to drink my beer very cold. On the verge of freezing even. With my first few home brews, I would refridgerate them and then poor into a frosty mug. However, I'm learning that you get a lot more flavor (especially my sweet stout) with a...

What do I need to know? Some basic?

Dont take a laxative and a sleeping pill in the same night.

    Oxiclean?

I've soaked my bottles for a week in oxi clean. Rinsed well with garden hose and saw no film. Used them with no ill effects. Not sure what this film is that you guys are talking about. Maybe its a water problem and not an oxi clean problem.

alot of sedement in my bottles.

Ferment in 1 bucket or carboy for at least 2 or 3 weeks depending on ur recipe. Use a hydrometer to determine exactly when to bottle. Sipbon carefully, without splashing and without sucking up the yeast cake into ur bottling bucket. Bottle from a bottling bucket, not from ur fermentation vessle...

    help diagnosing a problem.

Update- my 4th bottle was fine. 3 outta 4 were fine so far. Looks like an isolated bottle. Thank goodness because it's tastey beer. So do u folks think it was a bad seal or an infection, or a bad seal that led to an infection? Just trying to make sure this never happens again.

    Loud noises near fermentation?

Your question was whether or not loud noise would effect yeast and fermentation. I think the consensus here is that there would be no negative effect. However, there's no telling if some music might actually help. Give it a try. Make a mini experiment out of it and lets us know the results. If...

    help diagnosing a problem.

I was feeling better until you used that big scary lacto word. What the heck is that? And I'm stubborn so I drank that cloudy, flat beer. Am I gonna die?

    help diagnosing a problem.

Thanks fellas. They were not twist off caps. My first few 5 gallon batches came out fine so I'm pretty confident in my process. I'll know a lot more when I crack another bottle tomorrow. I was more surprised at the cloudiness than the lack of carb. Oh well. Time will tell.

    help diagnosing a problem.

I primed same way as other batches that were fine. Measured table sugar per the recipe. Boiled it and the dumped half in bottling bucket. Started racking and added other half of sugar. I think that all went fine. 2 of 3 were perfect. I have another 1 in fridge now. Ill drink it tomorrow. If...

    help diagnosing a problem.

I bottled a northern brewer extract kit 2 weeks ago, caribou slobber. I've had 2 so far and they were perfect. Carbed good tasted good looked good. The 3rd bottle I poured looked like fresh apple cider. It was cloudy and had zero carbonation. Didn't taste bad and didn't have any foul odor. Is it...

Dropped my thermometer, broke it in the beer

Only in extreme circumstances would I recommend dumping beer. This is one. Dump it. Risks r too great.
