Herms coil in BK for chilling

When I was still looking at going 3v, I was leaning towards building the HERMS coil into the lid of the HLT, then you can move the HERMS coil from the HLT to the boil kettle, swap the lines for cold water, and presto, instant immersion chiller. In full disclosure, I went BIAB a year ago and...

    Omega OYL-501 Gulo

Did you brew it? I built up a starter off Gulo and now I am trying to figure out my grainbill. Debating on a couple of options, and wanted to see how your experience went.

Omega Saisonstein's Monster OYL-500 yeast, anyone?

Did a saison with it last year, using Boulevard's Tank 7 grainbill as a base. Scored a 36 at Schooner. FG was 1.001 so it came out much bigger than I initially expected. It was a split batch, with the other half getting 3031, which only went down to 1.005. I should brew that beer again . . .

Moving barb on Taprite secondary reg

The plugs are the same, and you can swap them. Note that they are in there tight and the brass is soft. Put a good 6 point box-end wrench on there, with no slip, and hope for the best. I wound up screwing mine down to my work bench to get it out.

    Quick BJCP Category Question

If tasting it blind, does it shout "oreo"? If not, I would be tempted to sent it as sweet stout or imperial stout. Sweet stout's list of examples includes an oyster stout, and oreos make a lot more sense to me than oysters. Also, regardless of where you enter it, recipe? I am curious and...

is there a ball lock coupler...

Are you trying to push CO2 in through the liquid out post? If so, the easiest way would be to change a CO2 line end to barb-FFL and get a set of MFL posts. Then you can screw either line to either post, and swap to FFL pin lock fittings if you needed to do so.

12 Beers of Christmas 2019 Edition

To anyone brewing the crabapple lambics, those sour cultures take a while to mature - so I would get started if you haven't already. I did one of last year's, and I was very happy with it, but I started it in early February. It went through several different, distinct taste phases as well...

    Rye Saison - first recipe

Be sure to take a look at Omega's Saisonstein's Monster. Ferment it warm. I used it on a Tank 7-esque grainbill and the beer was very nice. Also, for my 2¢, the EKG seems an odd choice in a saison (it's flavor profile does fit, but it's such a British hop that I don't see putting it in a...

    Kettle Sour

There was an attempt at it. Plastic-rim glasses, Ironic low-top Chucks, tall Ironic socks, skinny jeans that ended about 3" above the ankle. He liked my beer so can't fault his taste too much. The lacto acidity caused it to finish a little high, like 1.014, where the same yeast starter on the...

    Kettle Sour

I agree. Did a kettle sour, second boil was 20 minutes with 1oz Citra @ 20 and @ 5, came out a grapefruit bomb, to the point that my younger sister's hipster friends asked me how much grapefruit I added.

How to cut top completely away from keggle without a torch/plasma cutter

You should be able to get pretty close with a cutoff wheel, then use a heavier grinding wheel to get even further, then a flap wheel to finish, like @dx250 said.

    Chiller Recommendations

The Hydra splits the in-flowing water into three sets of coils, which distributes the cooler water more evenly throughout the wort being chilled. I love the **** thing. No fuss, no muss, just chilling 11g to 60° in ~10 minutes. Granted, by groundwater is 41° right now, but compared to my DIY...

What kind of fermentor are you using..

Thank you very much for the write-up. I was wondering about how it was in a practical sense - I have watched videos and seen how it is done, and it seems simple enough, so I was more interested in how it works as a practical matter, such as whether it was something you got annoyed doing or...

What kind of fermentor are you using..

Out of curiosity, how much of a hassle is it in practice to deal with commercial keg spears and cleaning, at the homebrew level?

What kind of fermentor are you using..

I have three of the 7g ones and I like them. No leaks. The triangular (ish) spigot o-ring goes on the inside with the flat part against the plastic wall. There is also a trick to installing the lid gaskets, so watch a youtube video on how to do it correctly - I screwed it up the first time.

    Tilt hydrometer SG

I don't think you need the tickler to keep it from going to sleep - I just leave the Tilt 2 app running and let the screen go off by itself - it keeps logging, at least with my old phone. Also, my K97 kolsch cream ale finally started moving 18 hours post-pitch!

    Chiller Recommendations

Spend the money on a Jaded Hydra or King Cobra. I finally did, after messing around with a DIY immersion chiller that was ultimately lacking. Used it for the first time this weekend - 11g batch from boiling to 60° in 11 minutes, and it his 140° in less than 3 minutes. Granted, my ground water...

    Tilt hydrometer SG

I like it for some styles - IPAs, kviek, hefes - since it is a good indicator of fermentation activity and when fermentation is actually complete. In terms of actual usefulness, I would rank it below a pump and a good chiller and a quality boil kettle. Checking fermentation status while at...

    Tilt hydrometer SG

Temperature swings can also cause swings. If you pitched warmer at 1.100 and then it dropped ten degrees, you could see the Tilt read something like that. I like my Tilt and it is a nifty tool, but it is not by any means a precision tool in actual use.

    THERMOMETER RECOMMENDATIONS

Good, Fast, Cheap - pick two :). I finally broke down and bought a Thermapen about two years ago, and I do not regret it one bit. I use it all the time in the kitchen and for brewing. I've killed five other generic thermometers in the last six or seven years, and honestly at this point I...
