    Kettle lid sanitization

I brew indoors on a gas stove, full boil with a copper coil IC. I don't use my lid. It makes the trek up from the basement to the kitchen on brew days, but sits on the counter. If I ever need it, I'll just give it a few sprays with StarSan and call it a day.

Found a bucket after 2 years

Probably, all of the bacteria in that beer have had time to assimilate his body now, and they're now using his zombified corpse to access HBT. I wouldn't trust anything the OP says from now on...

    Wort Chiller Woes

My kitchen faucet doesn't have a hose adapter either. I bought a food grade hose and run it from my laundry room next to the kitchen to the IC. Problem solved.

    Old Beer

2 year old Coors Light. Went over to a friend's house and he offered my wife and me a beer. He had just bought a (relatively) new fridge off craigslist, and the guy had told him he could take the beer that was in the fridge. Since Bud Light is my preferred BMC, I don't drink Coors Light ever...

Used Beer Bottles and Bottling question

I soak mine in a large Rubbermaid container filled with about 10 gallons of hot water and Oxyclean. I let them soak for about 10 to 15 minutes or longer. Many labels will peel right off, I use a sponge to clean the glue off. Stubborn labels and glue get steel wool. I'm ignoring the painted...

How many gallons of homebrew in 2015?

5 gallons of robust porter. Also had a bad brew day. I forgot to check my little battery operated pump before I hooked up my IC. of course it didn't work, so had to start running water into buckets to get my wort chilled. Ended up losing about two gallons of water all over the kitchen. SWMBO...

Evergreens (spruce, fir, pine, cedar etc)

I brewed a winter porter kit from Great Fermentations that added dried juniper berries to the boil. I finally started drinking them over the last week, and I'm honestly not sure how I feel about it, I think it could have used more.

    Reheating priming sugar

This is an old thread, but I wanted to update this after finally cracking open a couple of these brews over the last week or so. The carbonation has been a little lighter than I would have liked, but I also conditioned slightly colder (probably about 60 degrees) than recommended. So, apparently...

Used Water to Chill Wort. Did I ruin everything?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this, but definitely consider spending $50 on an immersion chiller. I bought mine after my first batch. I run a food grade hose from my washing machine spigot to my stovetop. The first ten gallons I run through the IC goes into a tub which I use to clean my...

Funny things you've overheard about beer

I've done multiple personal studies on this subject, and usually try to not limit myself just to porters - all for science. I've found that my body will purge itself immediately if I drink too much. If I am not overserved, the beer usually finds its way through my system and purges about 3 hours...

    Reheating priming sugar

LOL! I talked my wife into only doing two Christmas trees in our house this year. An 8 ft and a 5'. Last year we had a little 2' in the basement that I talked her out of this year. I may have to convince her to let me do a third tree next year...

How many beers do you drink a night?

    Reheating priming sugar

I went with the fast rack tray, since it would be easier to store in my closet when not in use. I need to get a couple more of them. It's also much easier to transport up and down the stairs when loaded, since it only has 24 bottles on it.

    Reheating priming sugar

Yep, I'm thinking I'm fine, just wanted a little reassurance. I haven't seen any threads on reheating sugar here on the forum, so I figured I'd ask. If I'd let it sit uncovered, I think I would have tossed it. The 2 cups of water I boiled the sugar in can't make a major difference in the...

    Reheating priming sugar

Yeah, afterwards I read that I could have used the DME. I used freshly bought priming sugar. I originally cleaned/delabeled this batch of bottles on the day I brewed. I used the first run of water from my IC into a large tub with powdered oxyclean in it. Roughly 1/2 scoop to probably 10...

    Reheating priming sugar

Hey everyone, I had the worst experience trying to bottle a winter porter last week. I started last Sunday, and it turned out the bag in my supply box that I thought was priming sugar was actually DME. So, no bottling. So I tried to bottle again on Wednesday night, grabbed my clean bottles, and...
