BE-256 dry Fermetis 'abbey'; has anyone used it , results?

Alright... I typed up my last post immediately after adding the sugar and two things happened since then. First, fermentation has already picked back up! It's been thirty minutes. I swear the yeast was starting nearly this quick when I pitched it a couple days ago. Second, the Fermentis rep...

BE-256 dry Fermetis 'abbey'; has anyone used it , results?

Well... I decided to pop open the fermenter (after two days) because fermentation seemed to be slowing in terms of airlock activity. When I added the sugar, skimming/cropping the yeast wasn't an option because the krausen had already dropped! Maybe I'll try to crop tomorrow if the activity has...

BE-256 dry Fermetis 'abbey'; has anyone used it , results?

RPh, can I ask why? Is that common knowledge or based on your experience? Genuinely curious and trying to learn more here. Thanks!

BE-256 dry Fermetis 'abbey'; has anyone used it , results?

OK, since I will likely reach final gravity twice, once with the original wort and then once again after the sugar addition, do you think Fermentis intends for people to crop twice?

BE-256 dry Fermetis 'abbey'; has anyone used it , results?

I would have left it alone, if it wasn't for the comment (quoted above) directly from the Fermentis website. I'm wondering if cropping removes the yeast and prevents them from "cleaning up" any phenolic compounds, which would give the finished beer a more Belgiany flavor and aroma. I have no...

BE-256 dry Fermetis 'abbey'; has anyone used it , results?

Good stuff! This is the kind of conversation I was hoping to generate. Thanks for taking the time to give such a detailed response. And THIS is exactly what I'm hoping Fermentis will answer. Unless of course someone else here can speak from experience.

BE-256 dry Fermetis 'abbey'; has anyone used it , results?

Thanks for the response! I understand all of this. I'm not looking for info on cropping in general, but rather why/how fermentis recommends cropping this strain to improve "generation zero" when I'm not planning on reusing the yeast for future generations. Their website says: "To maintain the...

BE-256 dry Fermetis 'abbey'; has anyone used it , results?

Thanks for the advice, sounds interesting, but I already brewed the beer and don't have either of those available. I've searched all over and can't find much on this. I checked the fermentis site, read all of the documents on their website that might address it... No luck. I emailed...

What should I brew with these ingredients?

The "Kolsh" turned out fantastic! After doing some research, I'm not sure it was actually a kolsch, but it was a good beer. Very clean and crisp. Definitely a departure from my normal beers. I'm glad I tried it and I'll definitely brew it again.

BE-256 dry Fermetis 'abbey'; has anyone used it , results?

Those of you who have experience with BE-256... How/when are you cropping this yeast? I just pitched in a Belgian golden strong/Duvel type of wort. I'll be adding some additional sugar for a second ferment (in the primary vessel) once the initial ferment slows down, probably in about 3 days...

    Baltic Porter recipe critique

1.014 does not sound cloyingly sweet to me, personally. Perhaps the body makes it feel sweeter than it actually is? I agree with others in that you can't judge a beer from a gravity sample. I've had gravity samples that taste terrible and the finished beer turns out great (and vice versa). How...

    GOOD on Netflix STREAMING?

I liked Godless. Unfortunately they don't have hell on wheels on Netflix where I live (SE Asia). I started it before I moved here but never finished it. Same with Longmire. Unorthodox caught my attention. You think it's worth a watch?

    GOOD on Netflix STREAMING?

I don't have it in me to watch those videos you're referring to. That is some sick stuff... I just finished Tiger King recently. It wasn't as good as I expected, considering the hype. I saw a comment on YouTube that said something along the lines of, "the saddest part of the show is that there...

Stone Chai Spiced Russian Imperial Stout Clone

At almost four weeks old, the cardamom astringency has faded significantly and the beer no longer tastes green. I'll definitely up the cinnamon next time. Probably increase the black pepper and nutmeg a bit too. This beer would definitely benefit from some aging/patience but it won't last long...

    GOOD on Netflix STREAMING?

I love Ozark and the new season was good. One of my most highly recommended shows. I liked the new season of You. Not the best show in the world, but suspenseful and entertaining. If you liked Sex Education and End of the ******* World, the writers/producers (?) teamed up to make the show I...

What should I brew with these ingredients?

You've probably all forgotten this thread, but... I've since taken your advice into consideration. I am being more careful with storing ingredients and plan on keeping them for longer. As for the Belgian stout, I attempted to step up Chimay yeast from the dregs of a few bottles. I grew a nice...

    Imperial Stout Ten Fidy Clone

Mine is about 16 weeks old and almost finished. Probably tasting better than it ever has. Roasty, caramely, and chocolatey. Strong, rich, viscous, and full bodied with a nice dark colored head. Really a delicious beer. I'll definitely brew this one again.

Stone Chai Spiced Russian Imperial Stout Clone

I kegged this a few days ago after 2 days of contact with "dry hop" spice/tincture addition. Initial tastings are decent, considering the beer is only a couple weeks old. Cardamom is very prominent and probably a bit too strong, but not overwhelming. The other chai spices are present but not...

    Chipotle Porter

How did you add the Chipotles? Boil? Secondary tincture? Flakes? Whole chilis?
