    Timing question/advice needed

It'll be fine in the primary until you get back. I don't usually take a gravity reading until after a week. When your gravity reading is stable for 3 days then your fermentation is done and you can transfer it to secondary or bottle or just leave in the primary for another week or two to let it...

    How close is your (L)HBS

Mine is about 20 minutes away. It's a touch pricey, but the guys there are really friendly and helpful and they've always had everything I need.

Commercial beer bottle label removal difficulty

Troegs 4.5 I find that the potato peeler works pretty well for taking Troegs labels off after a long soak but still requires some elbow grease.:drunk:

Not Great, not Good, but Passable.. What to do?

This is not a bad idea at all. My wife cooks things with beer all the time.

Dropped my thermometer, broke it in the beer

The beads are just steel, not lead, so really no worries there.

    Sanitizing bottles

Absolutely. Star San foams and there will likely be some foam in the bottles but don't worry about it. I've used Iodophor also which is no rinse and it doesn't foam up at all. So if the foam scares you then that's an option. Both are no rinse though.

Dropped my thermometer, broke it in the beer

I did the exact same thing last year. Rolled with it and it ended up being one of my best beers. I would run it through some kind of strainer to get any glass chunks out. If you're not comfortable with that though then I guess I would dump it. I didn't have any issues with mine though. Any...

    equipment upgrade

I also started with Mr. Beer and quickly realized I wanted to step up to 5 gallon AG batches. I had to piece meal my setup too as I didn't have much $ to work with. So I basically bought one or two pieces a month until I had what I needed.

should i move to bottle to condition

If your gravity is steady then you can bottle, but most people here(including myself) will tell you to leave it in the fermenter for another week or two before bottling.

    That point before bottling..

Actually, that's more or less how I do it. I let them dry a little. I soak them in a bucket of star san. Then i pull them out and stick them upside down in empty beer cases. Them I grab them as needed. Works pretty well for me. Some of them are wetter than others but I haven't observed any taste...

    Gravity Question

Sounds like the extract and top off water didn't get mixed well and your gravity reading had more of the water than the extract.

    What's in the water?

I have well water which is all I use. I don't really have any idea what my water profile is but the beer tastes good. I feel like my beer is more unique this way too as who my well feeds only 3 houses in the neighborhood. Maybe some day I'll get more in tune with my water.

    Plastic and Maximum Temperature

I beleive that most of the coolers are made from #2 plastic or HDPE which according to wikipedia can withstand continuous temps of 230 F and up to 248 F for shorter periods.

    Plastic and Maximum Temperature

I have scar tissue from a 3rd degree burn on my foot that I suffered from running hot tap water on my foot when I was 3 or 4 years old. I don't know what the actual temp of that water was, but it was hot enough. Now that was about 30 years ago and I'm sure things are a bit safer now but it may...

    Chilling time

I have well water and it's ice cold coming out of the hose which is great. I can get my wort from boiling to 70 in about 20 to 25 minutes. Before I started using the immersion cooler it would take somewhere between an hour and an hour and a half. My beer always tasted fine though. As I...

    Plastic and Maximum Temperature

Microwaves do not change the chemical structure of your food anymore than cooking with any other heat source. Many dieticians, in fact recommend cooking with microwaves because the nutrients are better preserved in foods when cooked with a microwave. As for the plastics, I don't really know. I'm...

Mr Beer Booster as Priming Sugar...?

I've used it as priming sugar and it worked just fine. I did exactly what you have planned. Boiled 2 cups of water and mixed in the sugar and let it cool a while before adding to the bottling bucket.

Started with Leffe Brown and finishing up with Sierra Nevada Summerfest Lager.:mug: Oops. Sorry about the double post.

Does anyone else think Sam Adam's beer sucks

Boston lager is pretty good to me as well as their Oktoberfest. My wife loves their summer ale, but I'm not a big fan of that one. They make so many different varieties that there's bound to be some good and some not so good. But of course at the end of the day, all that matters is what tastes...
