    Fastest Keg In The West

The party figure seems to only be limited by how fast you can pour, so surely this is intended to be a measure of solo consumption. In other words, how alcoholic are you, exactly?

    noob queation. . . . ABV

You need to oxygenate the wort anyway, so mix it well before sampling for OG.

    noob queation. . . . ABV

Yeah, BeerSmith says that you'd get OG of 1.02 and ~3.2% ABV from the 1kg of dextrose alone in a 5gal batch, not to mention what else is in that lager kit. Maybe I misunderstand, but maybe your SG readings were off.

    Fastest Keg In The West

There's obviously a big difference between a party and soloing. My last 4.5 gal of Centennial Blonde lasted almost 6 days solo (kicked early on the 6th and had to switch to Yooper's House Pale). Luckily, my next Centennial Blonde has been on gas for four days. I'll start drawing tomorrow and...

    Words and phrases I hate

Anyone mention "those ones" yet? An offense worthy of defenestration.

I'm worried about my JAOMish batch

It wasn't completely clear. I guess I wasn't thinking clearly when I bottled. Right now, I am considering putting it all back into a fermenter and pitching some EC-1118 with a little more yeast nutrient to try to get it going again. Doing so will add oxygen, but I've read that mead likes a...

I'm worried about my JAOMish batch

I feel like a gibbering newbie, but here goes... Three weeks ago, I started a batch of JAOM with slight modification: 1.5 gallon batch ingredients: ------------ Amt Name Type %/IBU 1.00 gal Distilled...

How many people have you converted to good beer?

I could only get two into the fermenter and that was a big mess, so I guess I'm limited by volume until I upgrade. Is there anything US-05 won't do?

    Just tasted my...

There is nothing wrong with force-carbing beer. I do both and my draft is just as tasty, but I get to enjoy it sooner than the bottles. The kegs even benefit from some age, though. The reason bottle-conditioned beer needs 3 weeks is that you restart fermentation when you prime the beer, so it...

    My first fermentation explosion

Blowoff tubes will save you enormous headaches. I only use airlocks for secondary, and I only secondary for dryhopping and for my meads.

ready to finally make the plunge.

MW had a father's day deal where they gave a free starter kit with purchase of a $125 gift card. Since I spend money like crazy there, it was a no-brainer. Like wfowlks said, if you wait around a bit, you can find good deals. It helps to go ahead and sign up with one of the supply stores to...

    Quick question

I had the same problem with mine. Cheap crap. What did I expect in a free deal from MW? I went to Home Depot and bought one of their lids (the white food-safe ones) that has a rubber gasket. It fits perfectly and seals well. I drilled a hole for a #6 stopper and the problem was solved.

What else is homemade at your house??

Never been to California, huh? They got happy cows and lotsa citrus.

    Another newbie question

Best of luckwith your ciders! The necessity of blowoff tubes depends on your volume and the size of your fermenters. I usually use blowoff tubes for primary and only use airlocks for secondary fermentation. An added advantage to using tubes is that you don't have to worry about the airlock...

    Another newbie question

Use blowoff tubes. Just run vinyl tubing from your airlock or stopper into a jar of star-san. If you need more visuals, search the forums. It's worthwhile for your peace of mind.

    Quick question

Your beer is fine. Most dry yeasts are recommended to rehydrate at 104-109F (I realize that WLP001 is liquid, just saying that it can take the temps). The worst you can expect is a possible off-flavor from fusel alcohols that yeast produce at high temperatures, particularly during the early...

    Just another reason to homebrew

...but GMOs are mostly safe, having been thoroughly tested in replicated and repeated experiments... Actually, I just checked this thread because I'm terribly interested in whether any of these guys would "still hit it".
