Moving to partial mash - what equipment should I get?

I've never done a partial mash before so I'm planning on using the kit https://www.love2brew.com/Mositra-Session-IPA-Partial-Mash-Kit-p/sbk033b.htm The instructions say to use 1 gallon of water to mash in then sparge with 2.5 gallons. I do have a small pot that can hold about 0.5 gallons...

Moving to partial mash - what equipment should I get?

This is interesting. So you're saying I could use, say, 3 gallons of water right away and skip the sparge all together? I'm not experienced with this yet but wouldn't that result in lower efficiency? If not, what is the point of sparging then? Using another bucket, say my bottling bucket, is...

Moving to partial mash - what equipment should I get?

I only have 120v sockets. I don't want to spend a lot of money right now since I just got into brewing but those options may be in my future if I continue.

Moving to partial mash - what equipment should I get?

I'm moving from extract kits to BIAB partial mashes. I'm doing partial mashes because I hope the flavor of my beers will be better, it looks more fun, and I live in an apartment with an electric stove (so boils over about 3 gallons take forever). I have most equipment including: - 5 gallon...

    Making a shandy

How would you suggest experimenting before bottling? I agree, I need to figure out what I don't like. All my beers so far have been extract kits from Brewer's Best. It seems that the lighter beers I've made lack complex flavor and are too sweet with a somewhat bad aftertaste. They also have...

    Making a shandy

I think adding the kool-aid packet to the priming sugar solution at bottling time is the best way to go. I was going to use 1 packet for 1/2 of the beer. I wonder if this will be too strong? If I really don't like the beer without the kool-aid, I could simply add some when I open the bottle to...

    Making a shandy

I've brewed up a batch of Brewers Best (BB) Weizenbier and it's been fermenting for 3 weeks. I took a gravity reading and it's ready to bottle, however I don't really care much for the taste. I know some of the flavors will change during bottle conditioning but, in my experience, the flavors I...

How to split 6 gallon batch

I'm leaning towards fermenting in the 6.5 gallon bucket for a week then racking to the 5 gallon carboy and two 1/2 gallon growlers for the remainder. I don't want to lose a gallon and I want to follow the kit as closely as possible. I agree, I'm not confidence I could split, for example, the...

How to split 6 gallon batch

I want to brew my first batch of cider so I bought a Brewers Best kit which makes 6 gallons. I have a 6.5 gallon bucket and a 5 gallon carboy and two 1/2 gallon growlers I can use. I want to use the 6.5 gallon bucket for beer the weekend after I brew the cider so I could use the bucket during...

    Dry Yeast for Hefeweizen

I just started a Hefeweizen from Brewer's Best (extract kit) which uses Danstar Munich (http://www.northernbrewer.com/lallemand-munich-wheat-beer-yeast) dry yeast. It showed airlock activity within 2 hours which continued for about 4 days during which I kept the temperature between 61-67F using...

How to crush campden tablets without contamination?

One thing I noticed the last time is that, after dropping the campden tablet in, stirring, and leaving it sit for about 30 minutes, when I started my boil there was foam on top before I had added anything else to the water. Is this OK?

    Wort aeration

I just use a hand mixer to aerate my wort. It generates a nice foam layer on top and is a lot easier than shaking especially in a bucket.

How to crush campden tablets without contamination?

My understanding is that it does remove chlorine and chloramines. With a typical tablet, one can use 1 tablet to treat (i.e., remove chlorine/chloramines) 20 gallons of water. One can get 100 tablets for less than $5 so it would be a lot cheaper to use campden tablets than spring water from the...

    Partial mash kits

Anyone have thoughts on the partial mash kits? How is the quality? Would it be cheaper to buy the ingredients separately?

    Partial mash kits

I have a kettle thermometer so I figured I could adjust the heat depending on what the thermometer says to keep it within the desired mash temperature. As for pH, I haven't read this is needed for partial mashes, at least for a beginner.

How to crush campden tablets without contamination?

After reading your comment I found that they act as a sterilizer to kill wild yeast and bacteria. I was told they are only to remove chlorine at tap water. So I guess I do not have to take any precautions when handling the campden tablets even in water that is not boiled. Thanks!

How to crush campden tablets without contamination?

I use campden tablets to treat my water during my extract brews. I want to treat all 5 gallons but I only use 3 gallons during the boil and top off with the other 2 gallons after the wort is cooled and in the fermenter. My process is as follows. I use a clean and dry (but not sanitized) bowl...

    Partial mash kits

I'm new to homebrewing and have done a few extract kits. I'm interested in moving to partial mash and thought a kit would be a nice way to start. I'm wondering if anyone has tried the following kits https://www.love2brew.com/Partial-Mash-Beer-Recipe-Kits-s/38.htm In particular, I'm...

    Weizenbier extract fermantation temperature?

So I've been using a swamp cooler to control the temperature which is a bit tricky. I have a temperature probe taped to the primary bucket which has read between 61 - 67 F. It's been about 6 days since I pitched the yeast. There was airlock activity within 2 hours which lasted about 4 days. I'm...
