    Forever fermenting

I've got a Lager that has been in the fermenter for a LONG time. I made the mistake of transferring it into the secondary (glass) before it was finished fermenting. We all have to learn somehow. Unfortunately, the most effective way of learning is by screwing up. I figured there was...

And You Say Kegging Is Easier...

Do you really need to shake the bottles to sanitize them? I figure letting them sit with sanitizer in them for at least 5 minutes is enough. Baking the bottles is a very interesting idea though. I'll consider that. One problem I can see with that is, many of my bottles still have debris from...

What do you guys think about the IO Star iodine based sanitizer solution? Pros/Cons/comments/etc? I use it and I prefer it but now that I think about it, I don't know that I've actually tried the Star San.

    Sam Adams Noble Pils clone

@jgourd - Thanks man, that's some good stuff there. In fact, I'm going to copy and paste that into a note for myself. I'll probably refer to these equations when I need them. Okay, so that flameout thing you're talking about; how long do you leave the hops in the wort after you turn off the...

    Sam Adams Noble Pils clone

Also, what would you use for a priming sugar, assuming you would choose to bottle it rather than keg it? I'm guessing just a Light DME, or do you suggest something else for this?

@jgourd you say: What's @0 min mean? Is that a dry hops or an aroma hops or... ? Thanks.

    LOL!!! Nice! I like that!!

And You Say Kegging Is Easier...

Well, I have a large fridge that someone just gave me. I use it for my fermentation, conditioning, and grain storage. I think I'll be able to easily fit two 7 gallon carboys in there and 2 kegs, plus at least two batches of bottled beer. The grain is stored in the freezer section. Being an...

And You Say Kegging Is Easier...

My wife has been encouraging me to start kegging. I have absolutely no objections to this idea, but the suggestion kinda caught me off guard. She and her sister are going to fund it, and I guess I just am having a hard time believing it. LOL! I mean, I never even mentioned it and she came...

    lol awesome! :mug:

And You Say Kegging Is Easier...

Clear off your counter, put your bottle bucket on a stool on your counter, and bottle your beer at counter level. What I do is save the empty 6-pack (or 12-pack boxes) holders that a six pack of Sam Adams (or whatever) comes in, and use those to put the freshly bottled beer into. When it's...

    My Aeration Idea

Hmm, seems pretty expensive to get started with something like that. :( The thing that makes me hesitate is, even before I knew what the word "aerate" meant, I was brewing (somewhat) successful beer. I understand that the yeast requires a certain amount of oxygen to thrive. What I don't...

    My Aeration Idea

btw, what's an oxygen stone? Google wasn't very helpful there, neither was wikipedia.

    My Aeration Idea

Now that I think about it, I can definitely see the concern about the dirty air. Yeast cells are microscopic and my kitchen isn't the cleanest place in the house. I can definitely see some rogue yeast cells getting in there causing trouble. I'll probably spray the air with some Lysol and find...

    My Aeration Idea

What would it take to get started with a pure O2 system?
  16. B

    My Aeration Idea

lol yeah, it can be a little bit of a workout but I gotta earn my right to drink the beer and exercise is a good way to do that! haha! Yeah, it's not an actual O2 injection system by any means. Maybe I'll put a plant next to the pump while I'm going at it. :P At any rate, it's certainly...

    My Aeration Idea

I had an idea on a way to efficiently aerate my wort before pitching and I can't see a thing wrong with it, but I wanted to mention it to you all to see what you think of this idea. I bought one of those high volume air pumps with a dual-action pump (blows air on the up stroke and the down...

And You Say Kegging Is Easier...

Yeah, bottling kinda sucks, but I don't think it's that bad as people make it out to be. It takes less time than the rest of the brew process. I'm not complaining about the rest of the process, but bottling seems to be the least of the work IMO.

And You Say Kegging Is Easier...

Ugh, bleach is yucky. You have to be sure to rinse your bottles out real good after you dump them, you stain your clothes with it, and as you said it burns your eyes and is an inhalation hazard. Not to mention it can cause corrosion in anything stainless or copper you use, such as your kettle...

    -20 Points

Wow, a lot of responses. Thanks all! I've been doing a lot of thinking today and I have a few theories as to what may have happened. I have to admit that I usually fly blind when it comes to this. I follow the recipe, follow my procedure, and cross my fingers. I am starting to see how...
