    Dual mashing?

bah, these are the kind of questions that spark brilliant innovations. humanity would never evolve if the people with the "well what if we did it this way..." thoughts kept it all to themselves, whether that be due to fear of witch hunt, bad tasting beer, or getting kicked to the couch yet...

Ahhhhh my efficiency is WAY higher than I thought...

when exactly are you taking your gravity reading?

    Dual mashing?

here's some good basic info http://www.howtobrew.com/section3/chapter14-6.html i do think that if you were doing decoction mashing you might see some different results. for single step mashing w/ grains that have enough diastic power for conversion, i don't think you'll see an increase in...

Can't I just use a grain bag in a cooler?

i was actually thinking about this the other day. i'm glad someone else has brought it up. sounds like a real easy way to get started! i'm not going to lie, the extra equipment necessary to go AG really kept me from upgrading for a while. specifically in my case tho, it was the turkey fryer and...

    Dual mashing?

i would be curious as to your results. nothing is greater at disproving theory than results. that being said (and please, someone correct me if i'm wrong) the mash itself is the actual process that converts your grains' starches to sugars. once the actual conversion is done, no more "mashing"...

    Qs about sparging

pardon the rambling, i typed this out at work over the course of like 5 interruptions. :) i've got a couple of ag's under my belt, and i've been thinking about the sparging process. not batch vs fly, but more like the inclusion of mashout. firstly, i understand how a mashout works, but i don't...

    Big Oatmeal Stout Help

don't move it until you've reached terminal gravity, or at least close to it. when you rack to your secondary, you want to leave as much of the yeast and other junk (if applicable) behind. it's been my experience that stouts need some time to condition, so be prepared for a bit of a wait...

Smoked Porter = "no smoke aroma or flavor" at competition

well bobby, i'm sure there is SOMETHINg you could do with them. dry hop maybe? or you could hop your starter lol. how about selling them on ebay, even if you don't have the alpha's i'm sure someone who doesn't want them for brewing would still buy them, just to have em. okay, how about this-...

Looking for advice - measuring brew kettle volume

well that sucks. my thermometer is 100% enclosed in glass, so i don't think there is a real risk of that. if it does break i'm tossing the batch anyways. no amount of beer is worth turning your esophagus into swiss cheese.

Looking for advice - measuring brew kettle volume

i'm surprised you guys don't even put the thermometer in. i leave mine in the boil the whole time. i know it's sanitized then :cross: if you have better bottles like me, try using electrical tape on the outside for your measurements. my notchmarks havn't fallen off yet and its been over a year.

    just my ic

just crammed one of these on the inlet and the outlet is empty. came from home depot. 3/8in copper, 3/8 in coolant line, and the garden hose adapter. plus some hose clamps. can get real life pics tomorrow, but the ic is in the shed :)

    just my ic

been meaning to put up a pic for a while now. 3/8. formed it around a cornie and a vodka handle. pretty happy and efficient :) i used coolant hose from the auto store since i knew it could handle the temps. double flared the ends of the copper and tossed the hose right on. no leaks and no...

    first ag today

it went perfect. decided edwort's haus was a good one to start with, and it was easy as pie. thanks for the advice and info hbt, i look forward to trying more recipes (not to mention trying the beer:)) its amazing what good planning will do, besides cleanup i think i managed to get done with...

    My Wort chiller is inneficient!

you could always turn the quarter in. into a pre chiller, and still use 3/8 for your actual wort chiller. better than wasting it, anyways.

30 bucks at walmart, if a dollar store carrying it isn't in your area.

    Finalizing my first all-grain-Centennial Blonde

just out of curiousity, why would you batch sparge 2x with 2 different amounts? if you were batch sparging twice, wouldn't you just divide by 2 for your water quantity?

    Leinenkugel Summer Wheat

tried their 1888 bock in a build your own 6 pack deal at my local liquor store, i didn't know bock beers were supposed to taste like a stout hah. it wasn't an enjoyable beer, but i did get to try acme's "california" ipa. it was quite tastey. i want more....
