    vodka in airlock?

Good point, I never thought of that. Isn't that the truth. :mug:

Heat and A/C Are Overrated, right?

So my heatpump died... as evidenced by the $300 electric bill I received last month. (Yes, I know, those of you with gas heat probably don't envy me in my all-electric condo.) Background: Outside unit is 14 years old, inside air handler is 30 years old. Sucks for me to be the owner of this...

    the law of diminishing returns

Thank you for a new .signature line. Agreed... and plastic food grade buckets are relatively cheap. The best advice I got from the HBT crew to-date was to brew often and start building up that pipeline. I've already had to start checking BeerSmith to figure out when I'm supposed to bottle...

    Rye beer

Welcome to the obsession... see how that puppy tastes in 3 weeks. The AHS Holiday Chocolate Stout I did tasted, well, not so good after 1 week in the bottle. After 3-4 it was downright awesome. I've stashed a couple of bottles in the basement to come back and try a few more months down the road.

    vodka in airlock?

Buy cheaper vodka. I know that cheap vodka can't possibly be as horrible tasting as gut rot cheap gin... but figure anything for $15 in a half-gallon plastic bottle is going to be sufficiently bad that you'll imbibe mouthwash for the alcohol content before you ever bother trying to move on to...

Has anyone else been brave enough to begin this obsession with swmbo pregnant?

I did laugh... but I'd have said the same thing joking around and my girlfriend would still likely have acted like she was peeved. :D

Has anyone else been brave enough to begin this obsession with swmbo pregnant?

This is true, but that is because we don't KNOW what the fetal toxicity threshold is for ethanol exposure. There is some research that has been done on other primates that suggests that it may be a very low level - so it is prudent not to consume ETOH while pregnant. That said, many drugs...

    Bottling from the spigot

Heh... I thought you were the one I learned that trick from also. I'll have to remember to attribute that to grinder.

    Bottling from the spigot

If you have an automatic dishwasher it might be easy for you to do. Do the "grinder method"... I throw a towel down on my kitchen counter next to my bottling bucket. I place the bottling bucket on the counter above the dishwasher. I have a short hose connected between the bottling wand and...

    conflicting starter instructions

It was older than dirt because everyone who goes in there says, "WTF, why don't they have any activator packs?" Then they go on-line and order what they want. :D

How do you sanitize your hands?

Wow, you're either sensitive or it was more concentrated than I'm making it. I have a little system where I dunk and rinse all my bottles in star-san prior to using them and the end result is having my hand either dunked in star-san or still covered in foam from it for about 15 minutes. It's...

    Liquid Yeast

For what it is worth, on my AHS Blue Moon Clone and AHS Holiday Chocolate Stout I used White Labs and pitched without doing a starter. They turned out fine and had no more than a 24 lag time. In fact, the holiday chocolate stout is absolutely amazing and I keep grabbing bottles out of the...

So girls like the smell of brewing

Next time one of them turns their nose up at the idea of beer - and remember they're not all as in-tune with the world as Yoop, but are only familiar with BMC - tell her it is like cooking, and basically, you can cook and you'd love nothing more than to cook a dinner for her. You might even...

when bottling.. use the hot glue gun.. love the hot glue gun..

LMAO. I see infomercials in your future. Can you wear a headset on one ear and say things like "Shamwow! It was made by the Germans. Everything made by the Germans is good." and "You're gonna love my nuts?" If so, there are plenty of riches in your future. :D

my personal victory (and new solution) to boilovers

Bah, I got my girlfriend over for exactly one brew day. She was rather bored and unimpressed with the whole thing. Doubly so when it came time to bottle. "Too many steps." "Too much waiting for it to finish boiling." *shrug* I notice she hasn't minded the finished products, and I put a slew...

    Hit OG, Missed FG

Raising the temps and stirring the yeast might help get some of that yeast back in business - but you racked the beer off of a lot of yeast you could have tried to put back to work when you went to secondary. Why is everyone in such a hurry to rack off the primary? Ah yes, because we're...

Trying the First Bottle of the first Batch

That's such easy advice to give... yet so difficult to follow. :-) Thank goodness my pipeline is coming along nicely. The urge to rush to pop open a bottle is finally wearing off. :mug:

    Apfelwein. Juice or cider?

Maybe I'm just boring, but for the first time out, I'd probably follow the system that seems to work the best - then start tweaking it from there... https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f81/edworts-apfelwein-33986/

    Apricot Pale Ale

Don't secondary until primary fermentation is complete. "Secondary fermenter" is a misnomer.
