Tried my first beer from my first batch........

Congrats on the first beer. Get the pipeline going, because you're going to be obsessed soon. Especially if you hang out on here long enough. :-)

What's in the bottom of my fermenter?

Just wait and see how much is down there AFTER you're done with fermentation and everything has settled out and the yeast has all flocculated.

    Overzealous foaming

Glad to know I'm not the only one snapping auto-siphon tubes at the bend. *grumble*

    belgian fermentation

Niiice. The tripple I made also fermented quick... unfortunately the blowoff hose I was using was too small in diameter. The end result made a bit of a mess. However, it has been quite a hit with my Belgian loving friends. :cross: Edit: Although I still left it in the primary for a total...

    ported BB for primary?

My experience went something like this: 1) Read the instructions and looked at the pieces. 5 minutes. 2) First time fishing with the plastic rod: 30 seconds. Another minute or so to put the washers on, screw on the front piece, insert the inner piece. 3) Installs since then: 5-10 seconds...

    ported BB for primary?

I use supplies and kits from Austin Homebrew Supply almost exclusively. There will be packages of hops to add to your boil. They don't use "prehopped" extract. Their extract is fresh. Their kits have made excellent beers for me. You will likely be happy. You'll also learn a good starting...

    ported BB for primary?

Depends on the beer. I start with an airlock, but if I see the krausen really taking off, I switch it out to a blowoff. I've had two beers where I needed to go to a blowoff tube (my Trippel and this week my American IPA). That's certainly one nice touch to the clear BB - You can see if you're...

CO2 from fermenters - possible health effects?

There, I corrected that for you. ;)

How much time in primary vs secondary?

Secondary? What's that? ;) Seriously though, if you've put this in the primary for 3 weeks, you're probably just fine to put this ale in to bottles to start their 3-4 week journey of conditioning. That's the option I would chose. But like anything with beer - there's plenty of ways you...

    Bottles and hands...contamination Question

If the way pr0n has gone serves as any sort of an example, then it is only a matter of time until Toi Sennhauser moves on from va-jay-jay beer (Toi Sennhauser's OPB - Original Pussy Beer) and decides to do anal.

    Controversy!!!

Welcome to the obsession... You just learned one of the most important things about homebrewing - if there is more than one way to do something, odds are people are doing it all those ways. To rehydrate or not to... a question that will be debated to the end of brewing days, I'm sure. :) As...

    Primary women homebrewers

The girlfriend seems to not mind helping me bottle, but she could do without the rest. Doesn't like the smell. Thinks there are "too many steps" involved and "too much time waiting for the beer to be ready to drink." So, basically, she knows how to handle my bottling wand and is all about...

    I think I underpitched

I'd go one step further... You brewed last weekend. So put that hydrometer down, put the primary out of sight, and wait another 1-2 weeks before you check it again. Then see where your SG is and if it is still dropping. Everything you've said here sounds like the beer is still fermenting...
