    Mineral Filters

I recently replaced my faucet water filter unit and I noticed that they seem to be pushing these new mineral filters. Basically the same filtration as before but supposedly runs the water over minerals to improve the taste. the unit I bought came with one but I've already tested to make sure it...

Will you buy Goose Island beers now?

I was just in chicago last weekend (ate pizza 6 meals in a row, life was good) and I tried to avoid goose island on principle but chicago is a strange market. Most places I ended up going it was the best option available. If there are multiple great beers to go with and I have a great...

Confused by Science (keg smart strip)

I ordered this smart strip thermometer/volume gauge for my kegs: http://www.austinhomebrew.com/product_info.php?products_id=11818 It hasn't arrived yet, but I'm really confused by the science of it. How exactly can it tell how much liquid is inside the keg from the outside, if they are the...

    oven boil?

I use them in addition to my range. I haven't tried them by themselves but I suspect that it wouldn't be sufficient with just two. I initially bought just one and used it with my stovetop but was still not able to achieve a boil (got to about 200F). Two plus the stovetop did the trick and I...

    oven boil?

I also brew in a small apartment with a low-powered electric range. I picked up two of these and now I can get a full 7 gallons to boil: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BDB4UG/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20

    Hot/Cold Blanket for fermenting

Has anybody tried using one of these blankets, with or without an independant temperature controller, for lagering or precise ale fermenting? http://www.huimao.com/product/showproduct.php?lang=en&id=29 If this works this would be a great option for me. I have steel conicals but in an...

    Stir Bar wandering off

I recently bought the stir plate from stirstarters.com and used it for the first time this week to prep the starter for today's brew. It seems to work alright for an hour or so then the stir bar will slip to one side or the other. If I set it to higher speeds it slips off after only a minute or...

    Learning Hops

I've been thinking of trying a smash. What about the hop schedule though. Do you think you could get more sensory memory from a hopbursted schedule?

    Learning Hops

What is a good way to learn the various hop flavors and aromas? I'm sure a decade or so of brewing and I'd get it pretty much licked but I'd like to speed up the process a bit. I've been sampling the hop pellets on all my brews and some I can already identify like cascade and fuggles but others...

Beers not tasting right? Fermenting temp a problem?

Yes 55 degrees is far to low for most ale strains. You are using a Mr. Beer kit though so there are many things that could have gone wrong even following kit instructions but this temperature is a big red flag unless you were using hybrid or lager yeast. If the low temperatures were only during...

    Just brewed 1st full-boil batch

or if you'd rather say on your electric range you could pick up a couple of these bad boys like I did: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BDB4UG/?tag=skimlinks_replacement-20 two of them plus my large electric "burner" on high seem to do the trick.

    Dogfish Head Reduces Distribution

it seems like almost everybody in this thread is reading this news as a sign that times are rough for DFH. This is quite the opposite. This is a growing pains issue and they're refocusing to keep the beer on the shelves in the areas where it sells like hotcakes.

    overhopping, astringency

Do you keg? I just had this issue with an English Pale Ale that I kegged and it was only overly bitter/astringent on the first day I kegged it. after letting it set overnight it mellowed out substantially.

    one step vs stainless steel

for the brew kettle I think any surface cleaner will work. I use a drop of dawn and a pot scrubber.

    I hate airlocks

yeah you guys were right. I decided to reseat the lid and when I took it off i saw a small little trail on the brim were some krausen residue looked like it had shawshanked its way out in between the metal and the rubber gasket. gonna take more care next time, I put this thing on the first time...
