    What my wife says

My wife likes that I make my own, she thinks its cooler than buying it from the store! She made a pot roast the other day and used a smoked porter I made in the stock pot! Yeah, she's good... so was the pot roast!

Warm weather brewing, any types good at higher temps?

Interesting! I didn't realize something like that would be that cheap. Maybe that is something that I could build. I am interested in doing a lager sometime and continuing to do ales in the summer time. I am sure I could find a spot in the garage to put one.

Warm weather brewing, any types good at higher temps?

Thank you for the suggestions, I have tried some commercial belgians (Chimay Grande Reserve was an experience in a corked bottle!) and really enjoyed them. I hear a lot about Saisons and would be willing to give that shot. I'm a craft beer drinker by nature and really enjoy homebrew. I have...

Warm weather brewing, any types good at higher temps?

Hey guys, don't have a setup yet for a fridge that I can lager or really control temps in so here is my dilema. During the winter time here in CA my themostat keeps the house at a nice 68-70, and it stays about 62* in my closet where I keep my fermenter. Great conditions for most ales and...

    non-craft drinkers complaining about homebrews

Yeah, I served a friend of mine a Stone IPA I had in the after asking him what beer he liked... He didn't know. I started to ask him if he liked lighter/darker stuff, and he said "i don't like dark beer." All I had in homebrew was a nut brown ale and a smoked porter... He took one sip of...

    5 Expensive Hobbies article

Yeah, I brew, have a classic car, and golf! Right now I'm only really doing homebrewing and golf on discount days because the car just costs too much! 10mpg in an old muscle car is hard on gas when its $4+ per gallon!

First Brew - Light Exposure - Did I Skunk My Beer?

Slightly off topic, but will a beer skunk through a white plastic bucket? Or maybe the correct question is how long does it take if full UV exposure through a clear glass carboy takes an hour?

Froze my Wyeast in the packet by accident!

I agree, I had a wyeast pack freeze in shipping from an online HBS. I let it thaw, smacked it and let it sit out for a bit and it never really expanded. I made a 1qt starter to see if it came back to life. It had a little action in it, but never really took off on the fermentation. I was up...

Russian River ceasing distribution to Washington

Filtering Wort from Boil to Primary

I filtered when I went from cooler wort to fermenter. I counted it towards my aeration! Actually I decided to do it somewhat last minute, so I had my grain bag I had just cleaned. I threw the whole cleaned bag in some sanitizer, rinsed it with some boiled water (my preference, not required...

Fermenting Temps for a noob - how serious do I need to get?

I agree, I fretted a lot on my first batch about temp. Under the desk in my spare room next to an exterior wall the air temp is at 62*, on top of the desk its closer to 66*! I fermented a smoked porter under the desk for 15 days before bottling, it cleared great, settled nice and came out...

What's your occupation: Engineer or Non-Engineer

Non-engineer... although I do have 3 years of a ME degree completed I never finished. Currently manage an auto service shop with about 25 employees.

    Cost Analysis

I agree. I liked going to bevmo and buying individual bottles to try out different craft brews. As I tried different things I typically ended up paying 3-4 dollars for a 22oz bottle if not more so. Chimay Grande Reserve I think was closer to $10. So in reality, ingredients and the like are...

Straining Wort into Primary Fermentation Bucket

Yeah, I wanted to strain my first batch and came up with the brilliant, and apparently popular idea of just putting my large grain bag stretched across the top of my bucket. Got out all the big stuff and worked great! This was using pellet hops too so there was lots of small stuff. I did...
