The beer that got you into beer

Stationed in Germany after college. Bischofshof hefeweizen from Regensburg, I still miss it.

    Brussels banning free speech?

So true. Recently a few people have been jailed in the UK for racist tweets about soccer players.

    Uncrushed grain shelf life

As long as it's stored dry, away from animals/bugs, and not in extreme temps it should keep far longer than you would ever need. I wouldn't really worry about it going bad.

    Oktoberfest Munich

The wife and I lived in Germany for a few years and only went once. It's fun, but can be pretty crazy. It's definitely best if you know someone with reservations. Are you doing anything else while there? There's so much in the area to see. Quite easy to get around Bavaria on the train...

    First time home buyer

One thing I wish I had considered more is property taxes. Of course it varies from state to state, but for me it added about 50% to my monthly payment. A general rule of thumb is that you will pay about 1% of your home's value each month for mortgage, taxes, utilities, and maintenance.

    I love my wife, but...

Good point. I know I've put her through the wringer once or twice. I once smashed my hand in the troop hatch of an M113, and told one of squad leaders to call and have her meet me at the hospital. She almost died when the guy called and said "mrs. F? Your husband is going to be ok." Maybe...

    I love my wife, but...

She takes the kids to her folks' place every summer for a few weeks. Got back Tuesday night. Yesterday she went to the store, did her shopping, came out to the car, and THEN realized that she locked her keys inside. Oh yeah, and left it running too! Later on, she comes home and gets stuff...

    Transporting fermenting beer

Got a keg? Transfer it to a corny and hit it with some gas to purge the air out of it.

Got a Beer Brewing date (!), need a belgian recipe!

Great idea. You've already got her on the hook for a second date when it's time to bottle.

    Surprise homebrew!

Hope it's still good. I don't label either, but you can get small garage sale stickers from the dollar store. I put one on each bottlecap and one on the recipe so I know what's what. It beats removing labels.

    Organic ingredients

Northern brewer has quite a few organic malt and malt extracts available.

The stupidest comment on your beer

Nope, American through and through, just a committed bud light drinker. I'm working on him though.

    What are you drinking now?

    Avery Salvation. Very nice.

The stupidest comment on your beer

Not about my beer, but still funny. Was talking to an acquaintance and the local brewpub came up. He's a bmc guy but started talking about how he liked the eepaw at the brewpub. I said "eepa?" "Yeah, the really hoppy ones." "you mean IPA?"

    Berliner Wiese and a Sour-Starter

Try the sour category on the recipe database. There's a recipe from Morkin for Berliner weisse using a homemade lacto starter with just grain and water. I would link to it, but can't figure out how on my phone.

    Best beer along I40/I30

Almost forgot, there's a relatively new distillery in Little Rock as well, Rock Town Distillery. It's right downtown off I-30.

    Best beer along I40/I30

Yazoo in Nashville is good for a tour. Diamond Bear in Little Rock makes some good beers but I don't think they distribute outside Arkansas. Also in Little Rock I would check out Whole Hog Cafe for BBQ.

Let's See Your Smoked Porter Recipes

If you're interested take a look at drinkrangercreek.com. They make a mesquite smoked porter and post recipes for homebrewers on their website. They smoke their own malt but you could probably just use rauch malt instead.

    Vanilla Cake Icing Aroma

How about cream soda extract? That might give you some buttery character.
