15% sugar in my pliny clone does what?

Thought I'd give Vinny's Pliny the Elder recipe a shot. Fell short on my OG probably because I had to cut my boil back to 60 mins from the 90 listed on the recipe and didn't account for that correctly. Made up the difference in points by adding more Dextrose. So now it looks like this: 77.68%...

Theoretically, say a brewery wants to brew my beer

Everybody on this thread is saying "You'll be lucky to get a free t-shirt". If you read his profile and/or blog post, the dude is now brewing for Hoppin Frog brewery in OH, which I can only assume is the brewery he referred to anonymously in his original post. Way to prove them wrong...

Capturing Wild Yeast in my backyard - Is this right?

Looks like I've done it. Krausen! Fun times.

Capturing Wild Yeast in my backyard - Is this right?

On a 40-ish degree day here in the country I created a starter using 2 cups water 1/2 cup DME. Covered with cheesecloth and left outside in a shady spot for a day. Took it inside, added an airlock and put it in my ferm chamber which is currently set to about 80 as it's housing a saison. 2...

Ever brew with sugar maple sap?

Well today I boiled it down and made syrop. Already have another 2 gallons hanging on the tree waiting for me. Going to brew some sort of porter next weekend with the sap but will probably just boil it down and prime the bottles with it. Think that's the right way to go here.

Ever brew with sugar maple sap?

2 trees 2 taps and in 5 days got me 8 gallons of sap. I am torn. My trees make the best maple syrop and this should net me about 25 ounces. Really want to try using it for my homebrew though. Maybe I just collect another 8 gallons and do both. Life is so hard. zc

    Beer fridge happy

The Pliny is 2 weeks old and the heady is 6 days old. I have friends in both areas. Love the Pliny but head to head I can't get enough Heady Topper. When you open that can its like you just crushed fresh hops in your hands straight off the vine and took a big whiff. And it drinks like it...

    Beer fridge happy

Sure have once and haven't found if since. Enjoyed that one. Not a fan of the goose island IPA though at all.

Myers Briggs would peg you as a "glass is half empty" kind of guy, wouldn't it.

Ever brew with sugar maple sap?

I'm the original poster for this maple sap thread. Lots of replies which I've found very helpful. But we seem split 50/50. Half of you brewed with sap and it added a maple and/or woody flavor. The other half of you firmly believe that it completely ferments out and lends absolutely nothing to...

Ever brew with sugar maple sap?

I need simple math help... It takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of maple syrup. So 5 gallons of syrup gets me 16 fl. ounces of maple syrup. Ok, easy enough. So then the typical sugar content in maple syrup is (or is supposed to be if you make it right) 66%. So 66% of 16 fl...

Ever brew with sugar maple sap?

I have a couple friends who are gluten free. Maybe I'll get rid of the grains completely and ferment the sap (with some other non-glutonous ingredients) into something of a "Saison Du Sap" for spring time. If the maple doesn't come through at least I can say I brewed it with my own sap. Or the...

Ever brew with sugar maple sap?

Good to know! I'd be VERY happy with just a subtle maple flavor. Really don't like mapley flavored drinks. Typically when I boil even 1 gallon of sap it takes a couple hours and has to reduce to maybe 1/20th before it starts to take on the characteristics of maple syrup. So I wouldn't be...

Ever brew with sugar maple sap?

I have a bunch of sugar maples and usually tap them around March every year. Wondering if anybody has experience subbing maple sap (not syrup) for water? Seems like you could mash with it, no? Looking for a recipe or suggestions for a style that wouldn't taste like fermented pancakes... zc

Is all grain supposed to be hard?

But hold on, there you go again (the royal "you"). Do I really need all that stuff? Or do I just need a big pot, a big grain bag and a thermometer? I can brew beer without tablets, moss, gelatin, isinglass, a chiller, a mash tun, and a burner. I don't even need a grain mill. What you're...

Is all grain supposed to be hard?

Yes! For me, once I wrapped my head around that simple fact the rest fell into place. More or less, steeping grain in hot water MAKES EXTRACT. After I realized I could make it, why should I be tricked into spending $5/pound for extract? No wonder the LHBS guy wants me to stay an extract brewer...
