    Quick Lagering Lesson

No problem. Overall, I've noticed that my lagers take longer to ferment than my ales, so you might want to plan for a month of fermentation and eight weeks of lagering to be safe. That means nearly 3 months between batches. If you can make an additional small batch and fit a 3 gallon...

    Aging Question

I let my first stout bottle-age for 8 weeks and then left them in the fridge for a week. I tried one at 4 weeks and it was good, but I'm glad I waited. If you are making 5 gallons, you can start drinking them at 4 weeks (put 12 in the fridge each week) and let the rest continue to age. That...

    Quick Lagering Lesson

That's perfect. If you can, brew 2-3 lagers close together and let them all ferment together so you can turn the temp down and let them all lager together too. I'm only a few brews in so far, but I've done a handful of lagers. I would encourage you to lager AT LEAST 6 weeks. I am fermenting...

pin lock corny kegs to ball lock

$30-$40 at the link I provided. I don't think ball locks are necessarily better, but they are probably a little easier to take apart.

pin lock corny kegs to ball lock

Well, they both work equally well, and it doesn't hurt to mix and match. The only differences that might matter are the diameter and height (as far as fitting in kegerator/keezer), and converting won't effect this. Unless there's something I'm not getting...

    Quick Lagering Lesson

I can get my fridge down to 34, which I think is cold enough, but get a thermometer and find what your limit is. I bought a used chest freezer (craigslist) and a temp controller (amazon) for a combined $150, and I can fit 8 kegs and CO2 in it. Your ideal solution may be to get 2 temp...

http://www.cornykeg.com/catalog.asp?prodid=682504 I don't know why you would want to, though.

    Quick Lagering Lesson

A temperature controller should cost $60 - $80. Totally worth it. But you are talking about lagering ales, right? In that case, a fridge at 38-40 degrees should be fine.

I never thought of this. Good info.

Question about changing the fermentation temp

Hey, I'm fermenting a BB Oktoberfest right now. I have it in my new (old) keezer at 52 degrees right now. It's been going for about a week and I haven't tested the gravity since brew day. Smells great. Anyway, I finally got my kegging setup in the mail last week (4 cornies, 5# CO2, all the...

    Kettle sizes

The smaller pot will limit you either way. I wouldn't expect you to be able to make a 5+% beer much larger than 20 finished gallons with a 20 gallon mash.

    Kettle sizes

you are going to need more water for the boil.

To Keg Or Go All Grain First?

FWIW, I am fairly new to brewing and I am in the process of going to kegging first. I've done a small BIAB AG brew, and I figure 2-3 gallons of AG batches along with my 5 gallon extract batches will work just fine for now. I was planning on upgrading to bigger and better brewing equipment...

    new to brewing. Oktoberfest clone

Don't be afraid to go lager for your first brew if you have the energy and excitement to do it. My first was an Oktoberfest as well, and even though I messed a bunch of things up, it turned out great. In fact, every single person chose my beer over a popular Oktoberfest in a blind tasting by...

    Handheld direct immersion element

I've been looking, actually, and I can't find them anywhere except on the old beer forum I posted that pic from. Essentially, I'd really like to get into electric brewing because brewing outside is impossible in Northeast Ohio 75% of the time, between the cold in the winter and the rain the...

    Crazy Question: Marbles

Your idea is different, therefore it is irrefutably great, as has been vigorously argued and proven in this thread. Enjoy your horse's pubic hair beer. :mug:
