Haven't done extract in forever - critique ESB please...

Thanks for the input - I made some minor tweaks based on your suggestions, but stayed somewhat true to original recipe b/c I am not trying to brew an "authentic English ESB" for a competition or anything. I am trying to brew something similar, but something that also fits my taste and is a...

Used entirely too much yeast nutrient

LOL - 40 doses of yeast nutrient to one batch... At this point, probably not much you can do but wait it out and see what happens. I think it might end up just fine...

Haven't done extract in forever - critique ESB please...

Not sure why I didn't copy and paste that from Beersmith. Estimated OG 1.054, estimated FG 1.014. Hence, a 5g batch. Not a fan of partial boil, but in this case I plan to boil 3.5g down to 3 or so, then top off to 5. God, I can't wait until I can find time to get back to AG and full...

    Logo Thread

Can't take credit for it myself other than being the brainchild of the ideas, which I then filled billpa's head with. He was the graphic design guru behind this one... and I love it!

Haven't done extract in forever - critique ESB please...

Oh one more item - most of these hops were about 12 months old. The EKG were originally 6.2% and the Cascade 6.9%, but I used the calculator in Beersmith to come up with these % based upon type of packaging and storage (frozen all but last 2 weeks). Do you think I have compensated enough for the...

Haven't done extract in forever - critique ESB please...

Well, I was off brewing all together for about a year and before that I was doing AG batches. I am getting back into the swing of thing with a new home and more space, but now I have home improvement projects keeping me busy and can't find 6 hours to do an AG. BUT... I have 4 kegs to fill. So...

Fermenting in fridge/freezer - when ambient/room temp colder than desired?

As opposed to brew-belt you mean? Any particular reason? Because it's more even/uniform temp throughout the freezer, whereas the brewbelt will concentrate some heat wherever it is wrapped around carboy? If I didn't already have the brewbelt I wouldn't have thought about using it (esp. when a...

Fermenting in fridge/freezer - when ambient/room temp colder than desired?

Wow, if I were motivated to be as crafty on brew-projects as you guys I could come up with something, I am sure. Actually it's not so much the lack of ingenuity on my part, it's the lack of time at this point. We have a new (to us) house and redecorating/refinishing/improvement projects so that...

Fermenting in fridge/freezer - when ambient/room temp colder than desired?

I'm not much for electronics, so I am going for one of the pre-wired versions where you just plug in the fridge and/or heater to the thermostat and thermo into the wall. The dual, pre-wired ranco is $119. I guess it is worth it to have such precise control of ferment temps...

Fermenting in fridge/freezer - when ambient/room temp colder than desired?

You guys are awesome... Now i just need to decide on my course of action.

Fermenting in fridge/freezer - when ambient/room temp colder than desired?

That would be the ultimate... everything I've seen on HB sites though has been single-stage controllers (and those are $80-90+) so can't imagine how much dual stage will cost me. But I am going to look into it. EDIT: Hmm... morebeer has dual stage for $129. Not bad I guess...

Fermenting in fridge/freezer - when ambient/room temp colder than desired?

Speaking of the brewbelt - if I want to use this method for heat alongside a digital control - would it be possible to run the digital control probe right into the wort (once sanitized of course)? Anything I need to do to "waterproof" the probe? I can't see how you would control a brewbelt...

Fermenting in fridge/freezer - when ambient/room temp colder than desired?

Interesting... never really knew they made such a thing. Looks like a heating pad basically. Would a normal household heating pad work possibly? Only thing I ever used prior was a brewbelt, but it's not very precise at temp control.

Fermenting in fridge/freezer - when ambient/room temp colder than desired?

Well, I know you can obviously use a freezer/fridge and temp controller to ferment things at a more precise temp when you need things colder than the surrounding environment/room (doing this in near future - lagerator out of chest freezer)... But what about when you need warmer? I want to...

Monster Energy Drinks attack VT Microbrewery

Finally got my letters into these companies... quite lengthy as well. :) I also ended with the fact that I would prefer they not even bother responding with their boilerplate "we did not file suit, just cease and desist" email and press release. So I am sure I will get nothing in response, but...

    Sexual assault in my neighborhood.

That definitely sucks and is scary man... but at least you are taking some action. Just don't go overboard. I'm only 42 miles away so send your wife up this way for the weekend. ;) I don't have any problems keeping guns in my house, luckily. :rockin: Unless she knows how to use them...

    anyone grow their own fruit?

So I just bought my first home and along with it got 2 pear trees and an apple tree... The fruit I see are pretty much decimated by bugs and bees right now, but I would like to try to get some useful fruit out of them next year. Any tips, tricks, suggestions for pesticides/insecticides. I'm all...
