How to: Build The BEST Mash Tun from a Beverage Cooler

How does a false bottom compare to using a hose?

    BB Oktoberfest Problems

Alright I will keep these in mind for next time. Just surprising that the instructions didn't say any of this.. They do, however, say that these yeast can also handle ale temperature for fermenting. If I leave it at the current temperature with my current yeast will it eventually ferment? Or...

    BB Oktoberfest Problems

Thanks guys, any general guidelines for what temperature I should raise it to and how long? This is my first lager so I felt the beginner forum would be best :)

    BB Oktoberfest Problems

I know, RDWHAHB I've been doing that ( :D ) I started a BB Oktoberfest Sunday morning ( http://www.brewersbestkits.com/pdf/1028%20German%20Octoberfest.pdf ). I forgot to add the dried malt extract until 20 minutes before the boil. The liquid malt extract got added on time. From the sounds of...

    Arduino Based Beer Monitor System

Yep I read the accuracy concerns as well. After reading through the materials list, I found all the materials to be food grade except for the magnet. Based on the drawing I wasn't certain if the magnet comes in contact with the fluid or not, but I'm guessing it does. The kegbot project uses...

    Arduino Based Beer Monitor System

That's what I'm trying to do, you can see me "filling" up the keg on the first video. I got the rest of the adapters to test out the flow meter today, had to take the breadboard because the breakout shield isn't here yet. I got some mixed readings when trying to siphon 1 and 2 gallons of...

    Arduino Based Beer Monitor System

I found some specific details about it here http://www.seeedstudio.com/wiki/index.php?title=G1/2_Water_Flow_sensor Everything looks fine except the ferrite.

Flow Meter to use with Arduino?

Arduino can do pulse type flow sensors using the analog pins.

    Arduino Based Beer Monitor System

Since the sensor is separate from the fluild, I figured I would sanitize the sensors by flowing star san through the lines. Parts from Grainger came in today. I have had quite a hard time finding an 1/2" female screw to 3/16" barb adapter. I compromised with a 1/2" female screw to 1/4" barb...

    Arduino Based Beer Monitor System

Reading through the DIY forum has gotten me thinking about a project I'd like to undertake, an arduino based solution for monitoring things like temperature, power usage, and keg volumes. Here's what I have so far: If anyone has any ideas, comments, questions etc let me know :mug: I'll be...

    Layering in carboy?

Is Anita 5'6" and skinny? I think I saw her today, got a brewer's best oktoberfest kit. I asked about getting set up to do AG, but I think I'm going to create my own mash tun instead of paying for a pre assembled one. Anyways, thanks for settling my concerns, I'll let it be and drink up some of...

    Layering in carboy?

After I racked into secondary I noticed this a few hours later: It's not a trick of the light, when I move the carboy the layer starts to dissolve but then comes back after a while. I hit both my original and final gravities. Just wondering what this is and if it's going to affect the flavor...

Measuring beer left in a keg

Here's another possibility. http://kegbot.org/about/faq/ I would want something rather simple though. What if we used a flow sensor on the auto siphon line as the beer is entering the keg (when you fill it), and then use that total number as a base line for volume. Then we measure the beer...

Measuring beer left in a keg

Measuring beer left in a keg

What about using http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10245 with an arduino? Get a triangle shaped stand, put one of these under one of the corners, offset the height on the other two, then take the weight given * 3 to get the weight of the keg? Here's a guide I found real quick...

Missed OG by a country mile

The water and wort mixture probably wasn't mixed very well, giving you an off reading. It's common in extract kits. As long as you ended up with 5 gallons total you're most likely fine :).

Sizing your Chest Freezer for Corny Kegs

Went out this afternoon looking at chest freezers. These are from Menards and Lowes: Frigidaire 9.0 Cu Ft Model LFFC09M5HW Frigidaire 15 Cu Ft Model LFFN15M5HW This will really hold 6 (8 if you put a collar on it) I ran out of cardboard :P Holiday 7 Cu Ft Model LCM070LC Holiday 5 Cu...

Avoiding carmelization - Afraid to boil

With my experience with extracts (3 brews) I have had someone stir the wort while I pour, and I haven't had any issues with adding 15 minutes in (when the instructions say). Make sure it's stirred in before you stop though.

First All-Grain brewday - weird results

Also make sure your tukey cooker air intake is adjusted properly. The right mixture of fuel and air will keep that baby burning better.
