    pet #7 question

I can't give you a definitive answer, but #7 indicates "other" so PET#7 would be a plastic that is PET but may have other plastics in it as well. (It's not a pure PET or it would be a #1) It may, for example, be a laminate with a thicker layer of PET and a thin layer of something else to...

    Scottish Beers & Breweries

I'm not familiar with aitken tall fonts, but here a pic of the bar. Maybe you can tell from this... I took pics whenever I could, otherwise I'd never remember what I tried. John Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Scottish Beers & Breweries

I only tried one Fyne Ale at the Bow Bar in Edinburgh but don't remember seeing it more than a couple of times. It was the Highlander and didn't suit my taste at the time...I'd be willing to try another though :) I was in Glasgow during the games, although it wasn't planned and we didn't go...

    Scottish Beers & Breweries

Just got back from my trip to Scotland, and while I tried way too many beers to list, I will share some and a couple of my favorites beers and places that we went. We finished our trip in Glasgow and went to West and absolutely loved it. It was a nice change from the cask ales I had been...

    Structural Engineers & Architects...

One cubic mile could also be a very long building, only a couple of stories high. According to Wikipedia, the most voluminous building in the world is 472 million cubic feet. A building one cubic mile in volume would be about 147.2 billion cubic feet, or 312 times larger. In theory, I don't...

American Pale Ale Chinook & Simcoe APA

Brewing this today...been wanting to try Simcoe for a while but this will be my first time. Bringing wort to a boil now. My LHBS recently changed the rollers on their crusher and warned me that my efficiency might go up, which it did, so this might be a little bigger than expected. Not a bad...

    Scottish Beers & Breweries

Hey all, My wife and I are traveling to Scotland in a few months and will be spending about 2 weeks hopping around the country, including a few of the islands. Obviously we'll hit up a distillery or two, but does anyone have any recommendations for beers to try or breweries to visit...

    Competition results

broncosmoker, thanks for the response. I did not change the grain bill at all from Jamil's version and I used the Wyeast 1968 and fermented at 67. The full recipe is here, about half way down the page...I used the all grain recipe. I can't verify that the grains were fresh, but my homebrew shop...

    Competition results

Hello all, On Jan 3, I brewed Jamil's Ordinary Bitter recipe and I really loved it. I entered it into a competition that was judged on March 11 and scored a 28 from a Grand Master judge and a 33 from a second judge. Not great, but I liked it so much I brewed it again (before I got the...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Brewing 5 gallons of an Oktoberfest recipe I pieced together from different recipes and extra hops I had. Last year I waited until August, this year I'm planning ahead!

How much of my oversized starter to use?

148 billion cells at 1 billion/mL is 148mL. Seems reasonable, and it looks like I have more than enough in my starter to cover that. Thanks! John

    Stir bar getting thrown

Are you using an erlenmeyer flask? I had problems with throwing the stir bar when building my stir plate until I get the flask. The other things I tried (mason jars, pitchers) weren't flat enough on the bottom, but once I got the flask and discovered the trick to positioning it on the stir...

How much of my oversized starter to use?

Hello, To save a little cash, I made a 1.6L starter (stir plate) last weekend and only pitched 1L into my dry stout. I used the rest to make a 1.5L starter for my next batch, which according to Mr.Malty, requires 148 billion cells or a 1L starter (it's a 1.040 bitter), allowing me to save .5L...

    Advice on Ordinary Bitter

Maybe I wasn't clear, the recipe actually assumes a 5% EKG, but I adjusted the recipe based on the 7.2% EKG I bought from the local shop to get the right AA. Not sure if it is normal or not, but the last 4oz of EKG (2x2oz) I bought were 7.2%, probably from the same crop. John

    Just Another Brewday, with photos

Here's a quick tip you might want to try if you're having trouble with your vorlauf. When I vorlauf, I do so into a small (2 cup) measuring cup that's small that I can maneuver it into the mash tun. When adding back into the tun, I position a ladle just at the surface of the liquid and slowly...

    Advice on Ordinary Bitter

Thanks for the ideas. Unfortunately, my Hallertau is 4.3% (the EKG I spec'd in the recipe is 7.2%) and I don't think I'll have enough to cover the IBU's, so maybe I'll just buy some more EKG. John

    Advice on Ordinary Bitter

Thanks, JR. I would account for the different amount of alpha acid if I substitute to get the same bittering, I'm just wondering how much of the flavor (if any) would change by substituting for EKG. John
