    Broken refractometer?

I sometimes find mine gives me a very precise line, and other times it's somewhat fuzzy... if it's too fuzzy for my liking, I clean it, take a new sample, and often it's sharper... I've never really figured out what the difference is to make that happen though. Maybe the amount of liquid?

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

Did my first go at a 1.5 gal batch yesterday, trying a recipe that I'm not sure I'll like. I was able to get a few 3 gal frosting buckets from a bakery, and I'm using one as my fermenter. Even for my typical brews, I do smaller-than-standard batch size, I scale recipes to 3.5 gal, but even so...

    Harvested yeast, jar not full

In my case, I partially washed the yeast by adding boiled/cooled water... so the "beer" sitting on the yeast cake is pretty watered down, which may impact what protection it's offering.

    Harvested yeast, jar not full

On my last brew day, as a bit of an after thought, I harvested and washed some of the yeast. I'd never done it before, and just thought it'd be fun to try. I ended up only harvesting a small portion of the yeast cake, and then separated out the yeast from the trub as much as possible through a...

    Show Us Your Label

Label from my latest batch (Da Yoopers House Pale Ale, I renamed my go at it). Don't mind the futuristic date on the label... I noticed I put the wrong month (should read Sept 29) after I'd labelled everything. lol >_<

    Fermentation

I've done an orange peel (zest actually) tincture by soaking the zest in enough vodka to cover the zest, in a closed Mason jar, left at room temperature through the fermentation. Then on bottling day, strain the zest out and add the vodka (now with orange taste and aroma) to the bottling bucket...

Low F.G. after low mash temp

When using a refractometer for FG readings the alcohol present will give you misleading readings. You can use online calculators to correct the FG reading,eg Part II here : https://www.brewersfriend.com/refractometer-calculator/

American Pale Ale Da Yooper's House Pale Ale

Got my go at this recipe in bottles last Saturday and I couldn't help but crack my test bottle this evening (5 days old). Great beer! Malty, I taste a little bit of a caramel note, with the slightly bitter citrus/grapefruit cascade following it. Very nice! Brew day was supposed to be a...

    Tilt Hydrometer

    Ahh ok I see. Thanks.

    Tilt Hydrometer

Is the data stored on the Tilt device itself at all? If a person wasn't interested in uploading the data to the cloud, could they just access the data intermittently by launching the Tilt app on a smart device when they wanted to, and have the full range of data upload from the tilt to the app...

    Inexpensive labeling

I just print labels onto regular paper, and stick them on with milk. Doesn't work if you put the bottles get wet, but a bit of sweating would probably be fine. Otherwise, if it's bottles I think are going to be stored in ice for example, I either just put a small label on the cap with a letter...

Jimbo’s Beerbos Famous Recipe. Fear the Walking Dead

He also whispered a secret ingredient, which we couldn't hear.... any guesses?

    How did you start...?

I brewed one crappy pre-hopped extract thing many, many years go. Then a couple years ago I decided I was interested in trying the homebrew thing again, but done right. I spent months reading, figuring out what I wanted / needed in terms of equipment, etc, and finally bought an equipment kit...

American Pale Ale Da Yooper's House Pale Ale

I added the dryhops and took a gravity reading this past weekend (sitting at 1.010, hoping it stays there). I tasted a bit from the sample, and was really impressed... for an unfinished, uncarb'd, warm beer, it tasted really nice, perfectly balanced. Looking forward to bottling next weekend...

    BIAB with 2 bags?

I've also done as Twisted suggests. I use a bucket for primary, and I've lined the bucket with the grain bag, dumped the (cooled) wort into it, then pulled out the bag and let it drain. It's seemed to work fairly well, other than I've found it a minor hassle to drain that bag, as the hop...

Quick question about hop steeps / whirlpools

I've done both... Manually stirred and just let it sit. Can't say I've noticed a difference in the final product... But I also haven't done a ton of hop steeping so might not be the best judge.

Chilling wort in FC after using immersion chiller then pitching yeast

I often have a similar situation where I can chill to ~ 80F fairly quickly, but those last 10-15 degrees to get to my desired fermentation temps can be pretty slow. What I generally do is chill to about 80F, put the lid on the kettle and go about a few immediate tidying up chores, then put the...

    Brew Perfect WiFi Hydrometer Review

Is the torpedo always applying tension to the string? ie it is always "sinking" to some degree, even at the start of fermentation? Or does it float at the start?

    Brew Perfect WiFi Hydrometer Review

This is the first I've heard of this device. Do you have to perfectly balance the torpedo / fishing line so the fishing line is just barely hanging tight at the start of fermentation?? If so that sounds like a difficult task. Lol

American Pale Ale Da Yooper's House Pale Ale

I brewed this on Wednesday as per the original post. Fermenting nicely and smelling great already!
