This yeast pack still viable for my next brew?

I like doing higher volume lower gravity starters in my 5L too. Is there a reason you're using an airlock? Kinda defeats the purpose of promoting aeration

    New to Brewing

20 gallons is alot for starting out, especially if you plan on drinking most of it by yourself. I've got a 5 gallon system with four fermenters and 5 taps. I brew 2-4 times a month which I feel is great for experience and experimenting, but between events with friends, submitting beers to comps...

For those who dry hop in the keg,,,

There's a bunch of solutions for this. I installed a Clear Beer Draught System on two of my kegs for dry hopping. They work amazing

Lager extended fermentation while on vacation

No. I routinely leave my lagers in the primary for 4 weeks before trub dumping from my conical and going into the lagering phase.

    Vorlauf and BIAB?

I was initially worried about this as well, but it had absolutely zero effect on my efficiency. I still hit my target numbers right on point as I was before doing this.

    Vorlauf and BIAB?

In relation to the original post, I do BIAB and as of my last batch I've started to vorlauf in addition to milling the grain in my straining bag and removing as much excess flour as possible from it before doughing in. I noticed a pretty significant drop in the break material that made it in the...

Advice on designing recipes from scratch

Since starting one of the most critical things I've learned is the simpler the better. My simplest and easiest recipes have most often produced my best beers.

Advice on designing recipes from scratch

Thanks! I just bought Ray Daniel's book and started into that sucker. As for copying recipes that's basically what I do now with slight tweeting. I've done three comps and won at least one award each time with my best being a gold for a very simple SMASH cream ale I did completely by myself. The...

Advice on designing recipes from scratch

So I'm coming up on 2 years since I got into this hobby. I've done 43 batches as of last week, 4 extract, 1 partial, and the rest all-grain BIAB. I've won a few medals out of some of these and hope to win more with a bos at least some time in the future. So far everything I've done has been...

    Growler options

I own a uKeg and love it. Are they as effective as a keg? Yes in terms of storing and preserving the beer within them under constant co2 pressure without having to expose them to open air. No if you're wanting to force carb homebrew. I think it's a worthwhile investment for beer drinkers as you...

    Sack squeezing and haze

I do biab and I've changed a few things since I've started. Not that I was making bad beers but I am trying to get a feel for the different possible outcomes. I used to squeeze, sparge, and did no kind of filtering of my wort at all. Now I do a no squeeze and just hang and drain for a little...

MJ's M54 Californian Lager yeast - ferment speed?

    The clarity looks spot on.

Any outdoor brewers attract honeybees when brewing?

Wasps. Spelt wort on my porch once. Literally 4 wasp nests popped up by the next brewday a week later.

    Is this ready for competition?

If you’re even remotely considering competing, just do it, and if you can try to compete it multiple times. Regardless how it does the feedback you get from comps can be invaluable. It’s not going to be your buddies huddled over your tap telling you how awesome it is and that you should open...

Mash PH is Very Low with BIAB - Numbers just don't make any sense

I'm not sure what pH the storage fluid is but the meters are designed to be calibrated at 2 different pH levels to get the most accurate reading at 7.0 and 4.01. Mine always requires some adjustment every brewday. You should also be reading wort samples that are room temp for the most accurate...

Do you calibrate your pH meter before brewing?

    Wyeast sloooow start

What is your projected og? A quad is a pretty big beer. I would definitely recommend a starter even if you had a fresh wyeast pack

    Becoming a professional, thoughts/perspective?

Probably a scam for $1500 books. Never heard of such nonsense.
