    Yeast clumps in primary-I think!

Thanks. I never had that happen before. The clumps were probably 1/2 inch in diameter and "nasty" looking.

    Yeast clumps in primary-I think!

Made a starter. Decanted part of it and shook the rest up with the yeast on the bottom and added it to my primary. After 2-3 hours, I checked it and there were clumps of white stuff laying all over the surface of the wort. I thought about mold but it happened to quickly. Got up this morning...

    Just Finished 1st AG: Results

Dogfish Head 60 Min Clone Recipe First, thanks to all who answered my questions last week ("AG Procedure-Please Check") I listened to most and should have listened to alf - but I learned a lot. First the problems: 1. my mash-out boiling water volume was not enough to raise the grain bed...

    AG Procedure: Please check!!!

Raceskier, I had to substitute for the hops that I couldn't get so I hope that it turns out OK. And I will look very closely at your procedure. Also thanks to all for the suggestions. Love this site.

    AG Procedure: Please check!!!

I don't know my absorption rate. I just took the .1 gal/lb from Denny Conn's article on Batch Sparging and used it as my own. I subtracted 1.35 gal from 4.22 gal (mash amount) and came up with 2.87 gallons. This subtracted from 3.25 gallons (1/2 of the total boil volume) left me with .38...

    AG Procedure: Please check!!!

I will be doing my first AG batch early next week. It is an attempt at a Dogfish Head 60 Min clone. After reading a lot on this site and studying Palmer, I set up the following mash schedule. Would you please check things out and make suggestions. I would like to get this right. Also, I have...

    Popped my AG cherry yesterday

My 4 year old grandson visited when I was brewing a PM the other day. He asked what I was doing and I said "making beer". He said: "Is it shark beer Pap?" He knows that I have a few Dogfish Head Ales around and likes the picture on the label. I have probably warped him for life.

Best method for cleaning & sanitizing bottles?

I heat mine in the oven at 338 degrees for an hour with foil on the openings. Put in a case and store them until ready to use.

Using a 10 gal Cooler for PM?

Thanks Kevin - waiting for a bigger kettle and a wort chiller before starting AG.

    Sanatized Dog Hair :(

Just got done making a starter. Boiled the water/DME for 10 min, cooled and added the yeast. I noticed a 2" dog hair in the mix after adding the yeast. I am about 100% positive that it was in the boil. Any problems with the starter? Dog hair in my house is a problem with 2 Australian...

Using a 10 gal Cooler for PM?

I don't have all the equipment for AG so am still doing PMs. I do have a 10 gal cooler with a false bottom and am planning to do a PM this weekend that has 4lbs of grain. Would using only 6 qts of water to mash in my cooler create too much dead space resulting in a lot of heat loss? To this...

    PM: Different Articles/Different Methods

I am a bit confused. After consulting 3 articles, Palmer, and a Software program, I am not sure what amount of water to use for mashing and sparging. All three articles suggest anywhere from 1.3 to 1.5 qts per lb with the same amount of Sparge water. Palmer suggests using between 1 and 2 qts...

    Partial Mash Question

I chose Full Body Single Infusion-Batch Sparge. This is for a 5 gallon batch with a boil volume of 4.08 gallons. The boil volume was set by the Beer Smith program. I have done two PMs and, based on an article that I read, sparged with about the same amount of water as I used in the mash. That...

    Partial Mash Question

I am applying an PM ingredient kit (Oatmeal Stout) to the Beer Smith program. The program is telling me to mash with 5 quarts of water and to sparge with 3.56 gallons of water. This is my first time using Beer Smith. The mash volume seems about right with 4 lbs of grain, but the sparge amount...

    Why wort chillers?

With an IC, is bigger always better? To cool a 5 gal full boil, would a 50' IC be any better, or is a 25' sufficient? How much time are you talking?

    Brew Pot and Wort Chiller

Need a little help. My wife is buying me a kettle and wort chiller for my B-Day. I will be moving from Extract and Partial Mash to AG brewing and will be sticking with 5 gallon batches that will be bottled. If you had it to do again what kettle would you buy and what Wort Chiller? Thanks.

    Anybody do wet/green-hopping?

I was visiting my son in CA this past week and had a chance to taste a wet(green)-hopped IPA. It was very good, with a slight difference in taste and aroma. I never heard of this method until this visit. I was one day late, just missing a wet-hopped beer festival. :(

    Extract to partial mash

My first PM was a kit I ordered from Midwest Brewing. It was "Cascade Ale" and it turned out great. Not a full boil and the instructions were easy to follow.

    Real and Apparent Attenuation

Thanks. On "Beer Smith" they give both, real and apparent, and i wasn't sure about the definitions.
