    2013 Hop garden photo thread

Ok maybe a noob question here but how do you folks who grow your own hops figure out the aa% on them???
  2. MadCnty

    Is this suitable ?

That depends on the amount you are fermenting... Personally I would go w/the brewers best buckets that you can find in MOST LBHS, and even online as they give more head space if doing 5 gal batches... And cost about the same amount...

    Just Wondering...

Never used pilsner (or alot of grains for that matter...) before today... I can say that this batch went ALOT better than last... :p

    Just Wondering...

Thanks for the reply!!! The grain bill is 5lb wheat 3lb pilsner and 2lb specialty grains... So I will just boil for 90 and top off if needed. :)

    Just Wondering...

Ok so I am wanting to try a wheat/pilsner beer and do not really want to do a decoction mash, which the recipe calls for... So my question is... Does a 90 minute boil take care of this or should I just stick with 2 row instead of the pilsner??? Thanks in advance... :)

Ok 1st All Grain today... Just a few ???

Yeah I am thinking that I need a total of around 7 gallons of pre boil volume... NOT the 9.95 gallons that BS2 suggested...

Ok 1st All Grain today... Just a few ???

Yeah I really have to work on temp control atm too before moving to 10 gal batches... The hot break was bad... In fact it was the first time I thought I was going to have a boil over, so I shut off the heat for about 30 seconds or so to regulate the break... :smack: Looks like I just need to...

Frosty glass or straight from bottle?

I never drink my home brew from a bottle... As soon as the pour is done I rinse the bottle and dry... I figure it's more sanitary this way...

Ok 1st All Grain today... Just a few ???

Yeah I was glad I took notes and I already knew about the dowel rod... I plan on getting one done before the next brew day... Like I said I just added 1/2 cup of DME and hit OG spot on, so no worries there... And all the equipment I used was a first also, cause when I was doing extract I was...

Ok 1st All Grain today... Just a few ???

Ok my numbers may be off a bit as I really did not measure the water per say... I used almost 2 5 gal water jugs, (my water here at home is WAY too hard...) and I poured them to the bottom ring of the jug... I also do not know how much wort I dumped but it was quite a bit IMHO... And I never do...

Ok 1st All Grain today... Just a few ???

Well I am using a bag in the MLT as well and drained the "deadspace" Looks like its going to be more notes... :o

    What are you drinking now?

    My try at a wheat...:p

Ok 1st All Grain today... Just a few ???

Ok so today I set up my 1st all grain brew... Not bad for 1st all grain BUT coming from extract, I had WAY too much wort at the end IMHO... 60 min boil stainless keg/10gal Igloo... BS2 calculated 9.95 gallons needed and I still held back on even that amount... I hit low OG (added 1/2 cup wheat...

Places to fill cornies - Indy

I would just call around... I'm sure with the likes of Sun King, Triton, Beir, Flat12, etc. around the area someone would help...;)

Show us your DIY stir plate!

Here is my newly finished DYI plate... Total cost was $2.66 which was for the cigar box... I do not have a on/off switch or an external speed control, but I used an old Zalman fan mate, for speed settings, and figure I can set it and forget it... :P

Guess what I found on the side of the road?

This sorta of discussion makes me feel old...:o Years ago I bought a keg of beer and at that time the deposit was like $15.00... The thing was (and I did not know it at the time...) that the local package store would NOT take back the said keg after 10 days... So I just would trade...

    My $2.66 DIY Stir Plate...

Hello all first time poster, long time lurker... :) I just wanted to post this DYI project as it is very easy to do, and yes I know there a ton of video tutorials on how to do this, but I just wanted to show my finished product... First off the only thing I had to purchase was the cigar box...

DIY Stir Plate For Under $10

I am making a DIY stir plate atm too... What I have used has also been "laying around the house" except for a few items... For the box I bought a wooden cigar box from a local store (since I do not smoke cigars)... Total cost $2.49 + tax = $2.66, and I plan on buying the rare earth magnets local...
