    I've got a stir-plate, now what?

You need a stir plate with a smaller motor. This one for $45 works great and made be decide to bag the DIY option. https://www.homebrewing.org/The-Stirstarter-Yeast-Stir-Plate-_p_1306.html

    Fermenting under Pressure + Chilling

I have a nice stainless fermenter but I use my Fermzilla All Rounder for pressure fermentation and really prefer it to the stainless one. As soon as I pitch the yeast, I put on my Spundit 2.0 spunding valve at 12 psi or so for fermentation. If my keg is empty, I fill it with Star San and purge...

    Dry hopping

i have tried the magnet trick and it worked ok but it doesn’t allow one to remove the dry hops from the beer after an interval. It also is more complicated to add a second dry hopping addition without more magnets. I am hoping the fishing line method would solve these problems.

    Dry hopping

I think my next experiment with low oxidation dry hopping will be to dry hop in sanitized muslim bags tied off with small diameter fishing line suspended from the top of my fermenter. At the appropriate time I will simply crack open the fermenter slightly to lower the bag into the beer with the...

Should I cold crash my first beer?

I would only cold crash if you have a specific plan for controlling suck back. If you drop the temperature from room air to serving temperatures quickly, there will be a significant drop in pressure in the fermenter. It is going to suck in either oxygen or sanitizer if you don't control it. I...

    Carboy temperature readings

I wouldn't even worry about it unless you are prepared to control the temperature with cooling / heating.

    Keg lines/storage

I made one of these simple line cleaners from a $10 tank sprayer at the local discount hardware store. I clean my lines after every keg. I don't take any chances on a line infection. I clean with PBW followed by Star San. It is quick with this tank sprayer. Of course, I also clean the keg...

    Fermenting under Pressure + Chilling

If I am understanding correctly, you don't want to set the fermentation pressure based on what you want after cold crashing (ie 40 degrees). Set it for your actual fermentation pressure (70 degrees if that is your goal). For me (and probably most people), we would then transfer the beer to...

    Thermometer suggestions

I find it most useful to have a small handheld thermometer. For example, when I am monitoring my water or wort temperatures (like when cooling with my immersion chiller), I will stir the pot and then place the thermometer right into the center to get a true representative reading. The...

    Questions on pressure fermenting

I don't pressurize my Fermzilla All rounder after pitching the yeast. I have my Spundit 2.0 spunding valve set at approximately my desired fermentation pressure and just let the fermenter gradually build up pressure on it own (which doesn't take very long). Then I fine tune the pressure with...

Pilsner, fermentation under pressure, temp and pressure?

I bet his beer turned out well. When I ferment under pressure, I usually use this calculator and ferment at the room temperature of my basement (usually 60-65 degrees). I set the pressure with my spunding valve to the pressure from this calculator based on my desired final carbonation level up...

Winter Brewing using propane - warm ideas

Like they say, there is no bad weather, just bad clothing. I brewed in -1 degree F weather last week in my unheated garage with no problems. I left the garage door open about a foot or so while my Blichmann burner was running. It is even relatively warm by the burner. I even used the outdoor...

Found a cheap plastic "carboy" option

The best part of these 4 gal water jugs at our local big box hardware store is that the companies detailed water analysis is available on their web site. This makes it very easy to make appropriate water adjustments for any specific beer that I make. Since my home water isn't great for...

    Yeast Nutrients

I usually follow John Palmer's recommendation and use it at least in my yeast starters. It is cheap. http://howtobrew.com/book/section-1/yeast/yeast-nutritional-needs/nutrients http://howtobrew.com/book/section-1/yeast/preparing-yeast-and-yeast-starters

Balloon filled w Co2 over airlock (cold crashing)

I also have a Fermzilla All Rounder and a Spundit 2.0 spunding valve and do pressure fermentations now. The cool thing I figured out with this is that I can easily purge the oxygen from my Star San filled keg during fermentation (ie. free CO2) and then also do a pressure transfer to the keg...

Balloon filled w Co2 over airlock (cold crashing)

I tried the mylar balloon trick for cold crashing but finally switched to cold crashing in the sealed keg instead. Not sure if you keg or not. It was kind of a pain in the butt. I was surprised at the amount of suck back volume with cold crashing.

    First stout, worried about over-pitching!

There is almost no such thing as overpitching (within reason), just underpitching. You are in good shape with an aggressive fermentation

Attn: cold weather brewers, I need an alternative to outdoor water supply

I brewed again today in Wisconsin in my garage. It was -1 degree when I started and about 12 degrees when I finished. My garage is unheated but stays about 40 degrees from the house heat. I again used my outdoor frost-free faucet as I always do. I had my 2 hoses stored on a hook in my...
