    Man i love Fuggles!

I made an English IPA with only Fuggles for the flavour/aroma/dry hopping and it first tasted pretty harsh, but a few weeks in the keg maturing makes this easily my favourite hop of all. If you like English Beer and haven't tried the UK Fuggles out in a brew, give em a crack they are...

Dry Hopping During Active Fermentation - Why Not?

I have heard people recommending against dry hopping while the yeast are still actively going about their fermentation business being that the aromas will be "driven off" or "scrubbed" by this process. What about the aroma oils already in the wort? Does the boiling process somehow protect...

My Fortune for One 5/8" Stainless Steel Fender Washer!

How's about getting some silicone ovenware containers and chopping them into as many washers as you can for less than a buck all up? Its FDA approved and will look after all your hot brew work for many many sessions. :mug:

    Mash efficiency calc..any help appreciated

Yep, that's what I meant (and did). I measured at higher than 60oF but converted using online chart. Duly noted. Cheers

    Mash efficiency calc..any help appreciated

Yeah I think that is the right way to understand your overeall brewhouse efficiency, which shoud be made up of two main aspects. The mash efficiency (how well the mash converts all the available starches into fermentable and non-fermentable sugars), and then the lautering efficiency (how well...

    Mash efficiency calc..any help appreciated

Hey there Walker, In my recent AG attempts, I am getting overall brewhouse efficiency around the 60% mark (calculated from pre-boil numbers), so I am trying to work out step by step what is the matter. The first thing I wanted to check was that I was at least converting all the starches...

    Mash efficiency calc..any help appreciated

Hi there, I am brewing at the moment an all grain wit consisting of 9lbs 50/50 pilsner & flaked wheat. Here is what I did 7.5 Qrts @ 140oF to hit 120ish for 15 mins Added 6.8 Qrts @ 210oF to hit 152 - 158ish for further 45 mins. (I hit closer to 148oF but my temp gauge is a...

first time using whole hops - quick help needed

No worries with what you have, It is a lot more economical for hop producers to vacuum seal them together to reduce packaging costs and such like. There will be no adjustments required to the bittering and flavouring/aroma characteristics. Whole hops are great! RDWHAHB :mug:

Lots of Wheat and No Hulls...Thoughts?

I am struggling to find rice hulls (or any other grain hull/husk for that matter) anywhere near me to help with an upcoming Wit (50/50 Pilsner and Torrified Wheat). I am getting a bit tired of ringing around without much luck and so thinking I will go ahead and give it a go. I have a SS...

Is it time for a new cooler?

For cheap gasket material, try making your own out of silicone baking trays. They are usually dirt cheap, you can cut them to size and are FDA approved. One tray will give you loads of care-free sealing to be used in even the hottest brewing application! Sorted :mug:

    Brewing on the grill?

Not sure what sort of grill you have, but I just completed two full boils, one for an extract (6 gal) and one for a AG (about 7.5 gal) that I did without problems on my BBQ. I just removed the hot-plates / grills and put my 10 gal stock pot straight on the burners. No worries! Give it a try...

    Vegemite in beer?

Just like the US, we have loads of beer coloured water that tastes pretty awful. The homebrew / craftbrew movement is no where near as far along the road as the US, but it is picking up. If you go to a pub and order a pint / middie / schooner whatever of any of the large commercial beers...

S-04 slow / stalled - got it going eventually!

While trawling through the search pages, I found various examples of people having short lag times and very active fermentation while using the S-04 (both dried and rehydrated) but I had a super slow start to mine. I eventually had to warm the wort up to above 70degF to get it started. I...

    Thoughts on an English IPA

Thanks for the pointers, will drop the carapils and bump the biscuit. What mash temp would you be aiming for? Cheers again.

    Thoughts on an English IPA

Hi there, Just getting into AG and looking to get some feedback on an English IPA reciepe I am formulating. Looking for something more traditional than the low ABV commercial examples out there. Inspiration for this came from a book which described one man's journey to recover the steps the...

First kegged brew, this had better work

Yeah that's what I was trying to say... Will purge every now and again to expel air left over from filling. Hoping to get my CO2 bottle filled over the weekend. Fingers crossed. Cheers

First kegged brew, this had better work

Well I took the plunge and invested in some kegging equipment, and tonight I transfered my first batch into a corny keg. I don't currently have CO2 so went the natural carbonation with a 1/2 cup of corn sugar, but I am not sure whether I will get a good seal on the lid without having the CO2...

    Dual immersion wort chillers

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone used a system of wort chillers where the tap water is passed through a chiller that is immersed in say, an ice bucket full of ice-cold water, before going on to the wort chiller immersed in the wort? The idea being to get the water flowing into the wort...

2nd brew batch - Simple Hefe recipe

Hey ben A bit of extra malt extract means the gods of homebrew want you to make a starter. Belgian's usually go off like a rocket during primary, but with a liquid yeast vial and some extra malt in your hands, go ahead and make a starter. Do a search on making a starter, keep it simple, and...
