    National Homebrew Competition

Well big thanks to you my friend. I just went back and reread all 5 of my emails and sure enough, my English IPA took 1st and my coconut porter took 3rd! I guess I was just a bit too excited to get my scores that I looked right past the rest of the email!

    National Homebrew Competition

Yea I did quite a bit of research, but obviously not in the right place. Oh well, I still get to enjoy the beer myself! I was told that they mark up the sheet somehow to show that you went on to the mini-BOS. Anybody know anything about this? Do they just note it at the top somewhere? I guess...

    National Homebrew Competition

Congrats on the chocolate coconut stout! What category did you enter that into? My chocolate coconut porter took a 36 in 13C and a 30 in 29C. Both score sheets said I should have gone with 30A. I did a ton of research prior, but it looks like I blew it ha! I'm in a similar boat in that my...

DIY Dual Chugger Pump Switch Box

I think I've decided to hold off on incorporating the digital thermometers at this time. They were rather cheap and I made the stupid mistake of getting ones that read in celsius ha! I've got my similar toggle switch box like you used and gonna just stick with that. I can totally still use the...

DIY Dual Chugger Pump Switch Box

Thanks a ton for posting! This is the most detailed writeup I've found, thanks! One additional question: I've got a couple digital thermostats (link below) that I'd like to try and mount on this toggle switch faceplate. It looks to me like these take 7-30V power and I'm not sure how to step...

Girl Scout Cookie Caramel Delites (Samoas) Beer

Do you have any pictures? I'm usually not a fan of cocoa powder, but tempted to try it as some of the score sheets I received seemed to hate on the cocoa nibs a bit. Also what do you mean you pressed half of the coconut?

Belgian Tripel Belgian Trippel (2006 World Beer Cup Gold Medal: Dragonmead Final Absolution clone)

Wow that's super fast! - What temp did you pitch at? - What temp are you fermenting at? - How did you oxygenate? - I assume you made a big starter?

Could you taste the coconut quite a bit in the wort before adding the 1.5lb into secondary? Also, I think the vanilla bean would be a good addition, nice thinking! I finally bottled off the rest of my keg last night and the coconut flavor definitely mellows and changes over time.

Girl Scout Cookie Caramel Delites (Samoas) Beer

I fully support the adding of black patent to darken this up. My first time with this did come out browner than I'd like, so I added some blackprinz malt and it looked much better the second time around. 1.5lbs of coconut sounds a tad low to me, but let me know how it turns out! Good luck in the...

Girl Scout Cookie Caramel Delites (Samoas) Beer

R1 turned out well, but still room to improve. It scored a 33 at the last comp I entered with most of the comments being to increase choc malt and bring out the porter characteristics more. I currently had 6.1% choc rye malt, but I'll be bumping that up closer to 10% or so. The coconut really...

Girl Scout Cookie Caramel Delites (Samoas) Beer

Mainly chocolate and coconut. Carmel is a tough distinct flavor to highlight. The chocolate and coconut were great, and with a little lactose really gave it a samoa taste. I brewed this again with a slightly tweaked recipe and should be getting competition notes back today.

    Milkshake IPA question

I'm curious about this as well. How did this turn out? Was 1.5# lactose too much or too little?

    BeerSmith Efficiency Calculator

I don't see a huge difference between batch sparging and fly sparging except for the fact that when you fly sparge, you can continue sparging until you fall below 1.010-1.012, but when you batch sparge, your limiting factor is how much water was dumped in. I have to imagine that if you stopped...

    BeerSmith Efficiency Calculator

This is what I've been looking for! Thanks for taking the time to write all that up. I've heard people say that some people brew based on volumes, while others brew based on gravity. I would say I brew based on gravity in the sense that when I sparge, I'll keep running my sparge water until I...

    BeerSmith Efficiency Calculator

Ah very good to know! Yea I saw that text on the left and I believe that's what linked me to that other thread I posted above. I'm thinking I might keep an ongoing tally of my past measured efficiencies and keep my adjustable Tot Eff set as the average of them all kinda like what you checked...

    BeerSmith Efficiency Calculator

Does anybody really know how to use and adjust this thing? I feel like I've seen so many different articles and videos of people offering their own thoughts, but nothing too concrete. This video for example, walks through a mock brew day and how to find your overall total efficiency. It ends...

The day I messed up but my beer didn't care.

Cool thread idea - My very first batch I did on the stove I didn't have a large enough pot, so I essentially had two separate boils and just counted out hop pellets so that things would be close to even. Beer turned out great! - I got a bit too excited on one of my early batches and added the...

Girl Scout Cookie Caramel Delites (Samoas) Beer

That's a fantastic question. I believe unsweetened, but not positive. Also, I didn't actually toast the coconut, but I would if I were to brew this again.

    What is a brite tank?

Brite tanks are used to carbonate and serve beer. They are usually routed directly to the taps, but can be hooked up to fill kegs when necessary. They remove the need for kegs to be used when serving off the taps.
