    Pre-chiller and immersion chiller setup

Using a pump to recirculate wort in your kettle (whirlpool) is the easiest, but pumps are somewhat pricey (relative to general brewing equipment). Before I had a pump, I just stirred the wort in my kettle with my immersion chiller. It worked well, but it was just annoying to stand there and...

    Brew Day Traditions

I generally brew early in the morning on Saturday/Sunday or on Friday evenings. Different traditions for each. Early morning: Good coffee and some Netflix in the background. Usually some cheesy action/adventure type stuff that doesn't require my full attention. Often SWMBO will bring out...

    What's in your fermenter(s)?

Another iteration of a house lager I've been working on. 90% 2-row, 10% Munich, OG 1.047. Dash of Warrior to bitter, Hallertauer for flavor/aroma, ~34 IBU. WLP838 w/ the Brulosophy lager method. Stoked. Cheers.

New School, Old School, and Superstition

I add a back-flip between spins 5 and 6 if I'm looking for a bump in attenuation. You guys are doing this naked right?

Calling all math geeks: Force carbonation math!

I love the math and the idea OP, but as has been stated above - almost 5 days at 30psi seems like a really solid recipe for over-carbonation. I've thought about these exact calculations myself though and agree that it would be cool if someone figured this one out. Fairly confident it's not...

Just another wood brew rig build...

I use a similar element for heating my strike/sparge water. With only 1500W of heating power, it takes quite a while to heat 6 gallons of water to those types of temps - 90min seems reasonable to me, especially in an uninsulated vessel. That's why we see all the 240V 5500W electric builds...

My 6 tap mini fridge kegerator build

Looking good man - you do nice work. Sorry to hear about the Dunkel. Damn picnic taps strike again. Cheers.

    Head Retention

Seems like 10% crystal/cara would be plenty for head retention. I have a Munich Helles on tap right now with no crystal at all and it has great head retention. Enjoy the brew. Cheers.

I may stop using Crystal Malts

This. I can't say whether it will be 3-4 SRM or not, but I bet that will look much lighter once it's in your glass.

    Vintage Kegerator Project

Excellent job on this - especially with the paint. Looks really sharp. I dig the chalkboard stripe. It looks sort of similar to my rig... except way cooler and fancier. Cheers man.

    WLP090 - Very Impressed!

Racked my IPA with WLP090 into a keg last night. The yeast took it from 1.065 -> 1.009 (mashed at 149). I like my IPA's on the drier side so I'm happy with that FG. Hydro sample was very nice. Hop forward, but I caught some faint touches of malt in there as well (grist was ~94% 2-row, ~3%...

What single change most improved your beer?

Temp control and water treatment are good ones. I'd also say that, for the beers I enjoy drinking, kegging was a big improvement. Definitely not trying to start the keg/bottle debate with that statement - I still bottle some beers. But for many styles I get a beer that (for my taste and on my...

    Cleaning with a garden hose

I use the garden hose quite a bit on brew day. Great for the mash tun, manifold, random buckets, wort chiller and occasionally spraying the dog (he's funny-looking when he gets wet). I also use it for cleaning my kegs and fermenters. Cheers.

Homebrewing -- Does it take too long?

I always find threads regarding time constraints around brewing with a family very interesting. Makes me realize that I should take advantage of my current situation (I live with my girlfriend, who is totally cool with brewing - no kids) and nerd out on my brewing a bunch before things change...

How many of you oxygenate dry yeast?

Thought I'd chime in as well. I've been using liquid lately, but had been using dry almost exclusively before that. I always oxygenated with pure O2 before pitching rehydrated dry yeast. As has been said already - what can it hurt? Good luck on your brew. Cheers.
