Perhaps none of you have done such a dumb thing as this...

Once you empty the beer from the carboy, turn it over and use a small pair of tongs to hold the stopper in place and thread a coat hanger through the hole. Bend the wire backwards using the tongs, then pull it out. Don't use a heavy duty wire hanger. The cheap flimsy white hangers are best...

    Rookie Mistake

I would wait until the starter is done fermenting before putting it in the fridge. It should appear a lot clearer with a noticeable layer of trub on the bottom. I let it ferment out before chilling because at the end of fermentation the yeast will store glycogen for their next battle, and it...

    Detailed Yeast Starter Questions

That is a great book. If you can, pick it up. My LHBS sells out constantly. And no wonder, Jamil Z and Chris White know what they are talking about. If you are at all interested in maintaining and propagating yeast, their book will help you greatly.

Pitched Dry Yeast Slurry Before It Cooled.

Eek 110F is a little hot for yeast, you might have killed a few of them. If you are rehydrating yeast I've heard that about 90F is where you want to be. Also are you saying you pitched the slurry into 100F wort? That's also too warm. You want the wort below 70F before you pitch. In all...

    Detailed Yeast Starter Questions

What do you mean by dig deeper? Do you want to harvest and store various yeast strains for later use? Washing yeast is a great way to do that. Provided it is sanitary it will keep for a long time, and you just need to make a starter to get it going again. Also, I have made starters before...

    Swollen Inner Packet - Wyeast

I'd make a starter with it before you use it, just to be sure.

    Swollen Inner Packet - Wyeast

I don't think the nutrients go bad. Your only concern should be the declining viablity of the yeast cells over time. What was the date on the package? If you used a fresh pack (less than a month old) you should have no problems. Did the pack swell up as it should?

    Detailed Yeast Starter Questions

You can't really "calculate" for a loss in viability with washed yeast. You really have no idea how much of them were viable to begin with. That's why a starter is always recommended. Even if your viable cell count is low, a starter will ensure that you multiply the healthy cell count to the...

Homebrewing in NJ ILLEGAL w/o permit!!!

I know right, I bet NJ police officers aren't even aware a brewing permit is required. Seriously, I have brewed outside and seen cops drive by. They really could not care less. The day they come over I will do as I always do when I get pulled over... feign ignorance. I'll just talk to...

    Home brew Vs. Commercial

Most commercial brewers cut corners to save money. You are using quality ingredients, sparing no expense to make awesome beer. Also a little TLC can go a long way when you are making something consumable from scratch. You can almost taste the effort put forth over several months in the final...

How much water for 1 gallon brew

You should not bring anything back from Hawaii. The volcano goddess Pele will ensure you have bad luck forever. Lol jk, you can bring back brewing ingredients. Just don't bring home any sand or volcanic rock. Leave the earth of Hawaii where it is. The wrath of Pele is great.

    Late extract addition question

Well, sugar levels in the wort do play a factor in the IBUs extracted from your hops. The lower the sugar levels, the more your hop utilization. So you may have overshot your bittering units by adding the extract late. I wouldn't say its a huge deal though since you only used 1 oz of...

    I <3 Nugget Nectar

Am I reading that correctly? 1/25th lb of roasted barley? That's only like 2/3 an oz... is that right? I assume that's just to darken the color a smidge?

    Philadelphia Bottle Shops

Also I would look into a tour at the Yards Brewery (Delaware Ave & Poplar), and maybe stop in at Triumph (2nd & Chestnut). A couple other bars of interest in the area are Notting Head, and Monks. Monks has the biggest beer selection I have ever seen at a bar. Seriously. Last time I was...

    I <3 Nugget Nectar

Thank you sir, I may try brewing this beer this weekend. Any idea what the mash schedule was? Single infusion 60 min rest @ 152F sound about right?

    I <3 Nugget Nectar

Troeg's is a great company. Their nugget nectar is so delicious I just want to drink it all day, even at work! Too bad it's a seasonal and they run out of it so quick because everybody loves it. To me this beer has an amazing hop flavor, yet it doesn't knock you out. It is subtle unlike...
