    Doughing In methods

I've never had any dough balls and I use a wood paddle with holes in it (this one). I guess a drill with paint mixer could work, but what am I really saving? It takes about 30-45 seconds to dough in and there's something relaxing and traditional about it, like I'm following centuries...

    AG using a bag

I just did this over the weekend and it was probably the smoothest brew day in the 3 years I've been home brewing. I pulled the bag and gave it a good squeeze like my old kettle-based BIAB procedure and got to my target volumes no problem. And my efficiency was so high (around 83%) that I...

    MoreBeer Torpedo Keg

I had a hard time with one and I called MoreBeer (where I got it from). They recommended seating the lid unlatched and then sealing it with co2. After it's fully sealed then latch it. I've never had a problem with it since.

    Watching Popeye

Directed by Robert Altman in his sort of journeyman phase between Nashville/MASH and his resurgence with The Player. Its a musical and was hastily greenlit after Paramount lost a bidding war for the rights to Annie. It was considered a flop. I used to watch this on my uncle's videodisc...

cryo hops/lupulin powder dry hopping question

So I brewed with the Citra cryohops this weekend. Really great smelling stuff! They are in pellet form, but more brown/yellow than pellet hops. I added them for a hop stand for an hour and I'm planning on doing two dry hop additions. It smelled more "smooth" if that makes sense; no grassy...

cryo hops/lupulin powder dry hopping question

Hi everyone - I am brewing a NEIPA tomorrow and using the Citra cryo-hops from YCH. My understanding is that it is in a powder form and I was planning on doing a double dry-hop where I just add it to the keg as I transfer. My question is, will that jam up the tap? I can handle pouring out the...

Did you get a shipping notice? I haven't heard anything yet.

    Batch Sparging Temps

I sparge with cold water all the time and its worked out fine for me! I don't tend to get very technical about my brew day and I haven't noticed virtually any difference between one batch I sparged with 170 degree water and another I sparged with ground temp water.

    Jaded Hydra....as advertised

I treated myself to a Hydra prior to my last brew day and holy moly does it work fast. Prior to that I had a pretty standard bare-bones 25 foot stainless steel IC and while it wasn't atrocious, it would take at least 20+ minutes to cool to around 70 (our ground water stays pretty close to 50-55...

    Oversize yeast starter

I've harvested overbuilt starters going on 18 months now and I've made 6 batches with US05 and if there is a difference I haven't tasted anything. I make 1.5Lstarters (because it's easy to remember that 100g of DME into 1L is 1.040 gravity), add a 1/4 tsp of yeast nutrient, probably out of...

    What burner to buy?

I think the only difference is the size. I have a KAB4 and a 10 gallon kettle and it works just fine. The KAB4 is awesome, very quiet and much more efficient than my previous (a cheap turkey fryer I stole from my dad). All the coating burnt off when I first used it. The other thing was that...

Tips on brewing a New England IPA

I usually dry hop twice. Once while the krausen is still strong but starting to recede, around day three or so (the "biotransformation" theory), and then another around day 14 or so. Also in terms of grain bill, I generally go about 85-88% 2 row, some type of crystal for color, and then about...

    Whirlpool/steep time

I bought a Hydra and it brought the temp down to 175 in about 30 seconds. It was great!

    Kettle as Mash Tun

You could just get a BIAB bag for the second kettle if you wanted. The big issue I had with using a kettle as a mash tun is not being able to keep mash temps. I've switched over to a cooler mash tun but when I used to do full volume BIAB in my kettle (Megapot 1.2 10g) I would lose at least...

    Banking yeast from starter?

This is what I do. Most of my beers are run-of-the-mill IPAs or summer wheat beers, kolsches, etc. I make a 1.5L starter on a stir plate. I decant about 8 ounces of it when its fully built up into a mason jar and leave that in the fridge with the starter wort. I've been able to keep an...

    Beer fads that have passed

When I first got into home brewing (the heady days of 2014!) it was all about maximum IBUs. 100, 200, 1,000.

Infection or Irish Moss at work?

Yeah, that's pretty much how mine looks fairly regularly. I just make sure to not disturb that stuff when I rack. It clings on pretty good so its not that delicate a procedure.

Thread about saving yeast from your starter?

I just make a 1.5L starter on a stir plate, pour out as much as fits into an 8 ounce mason jar and use the rest on my upcoming batch. The only thing I do to the mason jar is wash it with soap and water and spray it with a spray bottle with starsan solution. It works great! I've been doing it...
