Have you ever forgot the bag?

I BIAB mash in a cooler. It’s great! I used to mash in the kettle but it was a pain to keep fighting the temps but with the cooler that’s not an issue. And I use one of those round Gatorade-type coolers and the bag that I had for my kettle fits it perfectly. I tried doing a “traditional”...

Heady Topper- Can you clone it?

I haven’t seen it since fermentation kicked off since we are traveling for Thanksgiving (hence my desire to get fermentation going early in the week). But it had a nice orange-y color prior and at the beginning of fermentation. But I’ve made NEIPAs before and they appeared pretty...

Heady Topper- Can you clone it?

Update: I got home and inched it up a few degrees. There was nothing indicating any fermentation beginning so I pitched a slurry of Conan I had harvested a few weeks ago from two cans of HT and this morning it was beginning to get moving.

Heady Topper- Can you clone it?

Thanks! I’ll probably raise it up to 68 tonight when I get home.

Heady Topper- Can you clone it?

I made this this weekend; well the Farmhouse Brewing kit that is based off of this thread. The kit is great! It lays out everything to make the brew day nice and efficient. However, I had a question about the yeast. The kit comes with a package of liquid Omega Yeast DIPA. I usually like to...

    BrewJacket Pro

I’ve only used it once (and mainly to cool) but I really like it so far. At first I thought the Star San issue would be really a pain but the directions said one way to sanitize is to add it to the boil so I drop it in when I put my IC in and it was very easy to deal with. It does take some...

    $10 Thermapen Knockoff

They say Thermapen has a 3 second read time but in my experience it’s almost instantaneous. I’ve goofed around and rest the air temperature all around the house. That quick of a read is important for me in getting to strike temps on a (pretty powerful) propane burner where I can overshoot...

    Making a small sanitizer

I’ve had the same solution of Star San for the past three years in a spray bottle. It will be obvious when you need to make a new solution; it will start to be cloudy. Otherwise you’re good to go.

    FG from Refractometer

I found both the Brewsmith and the Sean Terrill calculators great for getting that ballpark (probably within 1-2 points if gravity) FG reading, which for me is fine. That’s about 0.1% change in ABV.

Massachusetts FS: Chugger Pump Center Inlet/Milwaukee Refractometer/Johnson A419

Hi - thanks for the inquiry, but the refractometer sold yesterday. I hadn't had a chance to update it yet.

    Obnoxious Football Trash Talk Thread

Pats have the league right where they want it to be. Writing them off and celebrating a new team, this time the Chiefs. Last time we were underdogs behind a supposedly superior team, this happened:

    Jaded Hydra/Spike 10 gallon fit?

I got a custom made one and it took 9 days from order to delivery. It is very much worth it though. I was able to get from boiling to hop stand temps (160-170) in about 90 seconds and then to pitching temps in about 7-8 minutes.

Looking to buy new kegs. Choices. Choices.

I have the Torpedo and I had a hard time sealing it. I called MoreBeer and they recommended leaving the cover on loose and then sealing it with co2. Since then I haven’t had a problem. I also had AIH kegs (when I did 2.5 gallon batches) and they were nice. My issue and it’s very small was...

why are all my white IPA's darker than should be?

How does it look in the glass? I’ve had plenty of batches of light colored beers that look dark in the fermenter because of the volume but when I pour it into a glass it looks the way I wanted it to be. Also extracts are generally darker than their all grain counterparts. I believe that the...

Massachusetts FS: Chugger Pump Center Inlet/Milwaukee Refractometer/Johnson A419

Hi everyone - A few items that I am not using, that haven't been used much, and that I am able ship. I will ship CONUS via USPS Priority Mail with tracking. 1. Chugger Pump Center Inlet. I've only used this once and it did great. My set up just isn't conducive to using it. I...

Replacing hot extract (hop shot) with actual hops

Shouldn't be a problem. If you are making around a 5 gallon batch, 7ml of hop extract is 70 IBUs. So calculate the equivalent from whatever hops you are using. Magnum's average AA is 15%; Warrior is 16%; and Nugget is 14% (per Brewer's Friend). Then plus them into an IBU calculator (like...

Did I waste my money on 5.2 Stabilizer?

I used it once and like Yooper it added a minerally/salty taste, almost like some electrolyte-heavy sports drink.

    brew in a basket

I like the bag better because I can squeeze the bag. I get about 1/2 gallon extra that way and it raises my efficiency about 5%. I make 5-6 gallon batches and can handle the weight of the grains but I would imagine that with 10+ gallons it would get unwieldy.
