    making yeast starters

Yeah, I don't use any hard-and-fast time rules. Once you see it turn light, opaque, and milky, you are all set. Once I see that, I'll let it continue for another day just to be sure. It usually takes me about 3-4 days. I like to make a(n overbuilt) starter the Sunday or even Monday before a...

    Imperial yeast

Me too. That stuff went bananas!

    opinions of full volume mashing?

I like to gather up as much wort as I can. I tend to lose a decent amount of wort to hopping (both boil and dry) so I like to give myself some extra volume to make up for it. I had an early batch where I ended up with like 3.5 gallons of final product because I was too lean on the volumes and...

Heady Topper- Can you clone it?

Tapped the keg on this on Saturday. Really great! I think its about 95% of HT. It was very orange and hazy.

    opinions of full volume mashing?

I'm fairly slovenly with my volume measurements since most of my beers tend to be in the 1.060's - 1.070's OG range. I usually heat up 8.5 gallons because with my equipment and technique I can get about 6 - 6.5 gallons into the fermenter through my BIAB in a cooler setup. I also squeeze the...

Replacing the braid in my mash tun cooler with a brew bag, and have a question

I don't know but I'd be willing to guess you don't. I've done BIAB in the cooler with grain bills with around 10% flaked oats and it hasn't been an issue. Last summer I made a wheat beer with 50% wheat malt and my false bottom got stuck (actually not from the wheat but from a few grain husks...

Replacing the braid in my mash tun cooler with a brew bag, and have a question

I biab in a round cooler and I don’t have any braid or false bottom. I also squeeze the bag within an inch of its life and at most I get a minute amount of hydrated flour in the wort. I think if you didn’t squeeze the bag you wouldn’t get that flour. Irregardless you would probably get that...

    Yeast starter storage?

Ive done this a few times and it’s been completely fine.

    Is my beer refermenting? (pic)

Did that happen pretty close in time to you racking it to secondary? When I used to secondary, there would be a little bit of yeast activity, similar to your photo, post-racking. It would die down pretty quickly. I can't remember why it happened (maybe it re-awakened the yeast a little bit)...

What is the differences between BIAB and All-grain?

I used to BIAB in the kettle and outside during some New England winters, the temps would sometimes drop close to 20 degrees, even with wrapping heavy blankets around it. I switched to BIAB in a cooler and its not been an issue.

Using US-05 for DNEIPA-should I do a starter or just rehydrate?

Interesting. Not to hijack the original thread, but I've been studying yeasts more and more and trying to figure out the fabled Conan yeast. I was able to harvest some from a can of Heady Topper and one from Focal Banger and I've got a Heady Topper clone dry hopping right now with that harvest...

Using US-05 for DNEIPA-should I do a starter or just rehydrate?

I used S-04 once on a Trillium-style pale ale and I really liked the results. Very hazy and hop-forward. I have read somewhere that Conan might be a descendant of 1318 but can't seem to find it right now.

Using US-05 for DNEIPA-should I do a starter or just rehydrate?

My very first beer I brewed was a DIPA and I just pitched one dry packet of US-05. Turned out great. It was probably 1.075ish original gravity.

Water questions....trying to up my brew

Just to follow up on my explorations of MWRA water. I tried a sample of the Heady Topper clone yesterday with the water additions that I made (2ml lactic acid, 1 tsp each of gypsum and calcium chloride) and I was very happy with the results. Not carbonated yet, but it really has that hard IPA...

Have you ever forgot the bag?

In my experience, it really simplifies the brew day. I don't need to heat up two different batches of water, deal with splitting any water additions, etc. I don't have to do any mash out, sparge, vorlaufing, or any other technique then heat water, pour water into cooler with bag, dough in...

Water questions....trying to up my brew

Sorry I didn't respond sooner, but we were traveling for Thanksgiving. I assume you get your water from the MWRA (i.e. from the Quabbin Reservoir)? If so they have monthly water reports going back to 2001 so you can probably get a good sense of what is in the water. Then I think you can check...

Water questions....trying to up my brew

Where are you located? Recently I’ve been paying more attention to water adjustments and really go Bru’n Water to really click with me. I also use tap water. I didn’t send my sample away but relied on our water report published by our state and municipal water authority.

Has anyone ordered a custom chiller from Jaded?

I believe if you go on their site you can select the custom price in a drop-down menu. I seem to remember it being a $10 price difference. I got hydra last year and it’s definitely been one of my favorite purchases. I can get temps down to 140s inside of a minute and was able to get this...
