    Good summer extract

Summer is coming. Possibly. Maybe. Any good summer extract kits you can recommend to try out? I want to brew now, so it is ready if this snow ever leaves.

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Anyone had success using a Mr. Beer fermentor with this? I have been fascinated reading through this thread, but have only gotten through a couple of hundred pages so far. I did a search of this thread, and while it was mentioned occasionally, as a plan people were planning on trying one, not...

    Plastic boxes for bottle storage!

Thanks for the heads up, using the plans above I made a couple of boxes. They turned out great, perfect solution

    FastFerment Conical Fermenter Problem

Quick question - I'm about to use my first fastfermentor for the first time for a batch of caribou slobber. When I first put it in the ff, should I wait a couple of hours to pitch, let it settle out a bit, clear out the collect bulb of the solids, the pitch, or just pitch as normal? Brew is on...

    Increasing alcohol in extract kits

Dumb question- I'm getting ready to do a couple of batches of kits of summer beer, in the hopes of good weather eventually coming. Is there a way I can subtly bump up the alcohol content of the beers, with effecting the taste / quality of the beers? For example, Would adding 1/3 pound of corn...

    Plastic boxes for bottle storage!

Anyone have a good source or solution for plastic boxes to hold cases of home brew while they condition in the bottle? I used some old cardboard beer boxes, but worry about them letting go when I go to move them after a couple of weeks. Any ideas welcome.

BrewNanny - What do you think?

well, if anyone in NJ bought one, PM me. I may file suit on principle.

BrewNanny - What do you think?

I didn't buy one, but here is the problem I have with it. He says in his email "We have limited inventory for all deals so act now and don’t miss out on the opportunity to buy a BrewNanny or BrewNanny Pro for 50% off just use discount code MARCHMADDNESS at checkout". As far as I can tell...

    NB instructions

Thanks all. I guess my question more is - when brewers best says "primary for 2 weeks", everyone seems to say "no, primary for at least 3-4 weeks". When northern brewers instructions say "primary for 2 weeks" can I follow that, or do I still add a couple of weeks to that before bottling.

    NB instructions

So, I understand that most of the brew kit instructions (brewers best, true brew, etc.) are lacking. Boggles the mind, since it seems like it would take minimal time, on a one time effort, to really make them really good, and turn more people on to brewing. Specifically, they usually undercut...

    Second fermentation..... When?

So I jump ship in Hong Kong and I make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing...

    Beer thief through bubbler?

I use a refractometer, so i only need 3 drops to check gravity

    Beer thief through bubbler?

Anyone know a good beer thief which will fit through the airlock hole on a plastic bucket fermenter lid, which would be long enough to get down to the beer? I have a glass one but it is too wide. It seems like it would be a lot easier / less risky to be able to just pop the airlock off, and...

Took the plunge with a FastFerment. Have a couple questions.

This thread was he first I heard if the FF. I'm new to brewing too, but I found the idea fascinating and just ordered one. Northern Brewers has a 24 hour 20 % off any single item sale, so brings the cost down to $80 for anyone looking to get one .....

Not panic, just trying to understand.......

That actual reading on the refractomter was 1.022, I did not adjust it. So we should be looking pretty good. chickypad - do you use the wort correction factor of 1.00 in the calculator? Is that pretty standard?

Not panic, just trying to understand.......

so then do I just use the brix meter on the refractormeter? there is a gravity reading too on the meter. why don't we just talk in brix then?

Not panic, just trying to understand.......

I did snip off the "mesh" end, thanks to a recommendation of my local brew supply store. I just realized my readings might be off. I used a refractometer to measure the current gravity, and without access to a Cray supercomputer or a slide ruler or something apparently that doesn't work. we...

Not panic, just trying to understand.......

lol yeah, I will leave it alone for a bit more. I will say, this is the first batch I ever made, and taking the top off, it smelled delicious :D Can I asked another dumb question - the last batch I brewed today. I made the brewers best double IPA. I set it up with a blow off tube -...

Not panic, just trying to understand.......

I just took a reading, it was 1.022. Original gravity was 1.044, and brewed on Sunday morning. It is in a pretty stable 64 degree room, no light, plastic fermenting bucket. I guess it is just churning along doing its thing?
