    Losing Heat with Reflectix

I use reflectix on my grainfather. As long as it is not on direct flame, it will take higher temp fine. I use it for the boil with an electric unit and it has held up fine against the side of the boiling kettle for more than an hour, as long as it isn't near the flame

    Stuck keg posts

I bough another ball lock keg. Looks great on the outside. I went to break it down and clean it. I can't get the posts off. The hand of Thor must have tightened them last. I have a deep ratchet set, I attach it and hit it with a hammer to try and loosen them, no luck. Anyone have any tricks...

What to do with smack pack

100 billion (in the smack pack) is well short of the 266 billion needed.

What to do with smack pack

I did use the calculators, which showed I needed 266 billion cells, well short of the 100 billion in the smack pack. I'm comfortable pitching under a little, this is (in my opinion) way too much

What to do with smack pack

So I wanted to try a Wyeast smack pack, just to try one. I smacked it, let it start growing, and started brew day. I didn't read the instructions close enough, and went a little over board with my grains, and buy batch is going to be well above the 1.060 they recommend for the smack pack. I...

Krausen almost gone on third day of fermentation.

Don't worry. all it means is that the primary fermentation is proceeding well, and close to done. let it sit for another 1-1/2 2 weeks, and you will be good to go. don't stress. just a sign yeast did its job.

    Grainfather!!

this is how I sparge. Induction heater on a kettle, adjust the flow on the ball valve, and you are good to go. (these aren't current photos, taken at two separate stages of construction, I don't have a recent one on my phone, but just to give you the idea of how it works)

    Grainfather!!

yeah, you will find that your efficiency will go way up with the GF. It really is great. For what it is worth, I usually mash for an extra 15 minutes, or for a total of 75 minutes. Mainly under the theory that it can't hurt any, you don't have to do anything to mash it for longer, and it gets...

    Grainfather!!

Welcome to the grainfather family! I have one, and have put about 20 brews through it. I love it. Easy brew days. I have two kids. I love the fact that a) the brew day is fast b) for most steps it is set it and forget it and c) makes tasty beers. For those on the fence, this is my average brew...

    Simple Yeast Storage Procedure

I tried this for the first time. I think my yeast sludge was pretty clean, I used a grainfather to brew it, which has a good filter built in, and then run it through a 300 micro hop spider, so I get little hope / gunk in the fermenter. The first picture is right after harvesting, the second...

    Short Fermentation advantages

    a) you are my recipe goddess (not on point, but thank you for all of the recipes you put up, I haven't made a bad one yet). b) do you think anything is going on, once fermentation ceases and the yeast drops clear? It seems that most people put forth that, after active fermentation ceases, and...

    yeast starter with harvested yeast

Actually, I was going to harvest yeast for the first time this weekend, and was going to ask this exact question. Let me know if you see a problem with this plan. I was going to put a gallon of boiled water on the yeast cake, let is sit for about half an hour, decant the yeasty goodness into...

    Keezer build question

for what it is worth, I was worried about the wiring too, so I got one of these fans. the cord is super slim, i just have it drapped over the back of the collar, doesn't let any air get out, and it plugs into any USB adapter plug, like from an old iphone or cell phone charger...
