Dead Ringer IPA BIAB turned Partial Mash

This brew was compromised from the start. I over estimated how much head space my boil kettle had and so my maiden all grain BIAB voyage turned into an all grain partial mash. I'm pretty sure that 12# and 7.5 gallons of water in a 42qt pot was going to end in a sticky mess so I ended up doing a...

Making starter wort, then adding yeast the next day. Doomed?

I dont know what the benefit to waiting is. I've read of folks who pitch at high krausen and others who wait till the starter finishes up then decant and pitch. I began the whole process of creating a starter last Saturday. I suppose if you were working with something store bought you wouldn't...

    Newby from NC

Better just have two so no one gets left out!

    Newby from NC

That beer looks like a great way to kick off the weekend. Can't wait to get out of this F-ing cube. What kind of glass is that? Some kind of Pilsner+Shaker combo? Looks like it would tip over easily. Or maybe the photo is tweaked somehow? If there's some kind of homebrewer meet up in the...

    Starter from bottle cultured yeast

Couldn't figure out Mr Malty. How do you calculate starter size based on harvested yeast? I wouldn't say the yeast in each bottle of Two Hearted Ale was of equal quantity. Yeast nutrient! Excellent idea. Must stop at the LHBS tomorrow to pick some up.

    Starter from bottle cultured yeast

I have this exact question as well. Are you making a 1L starter? I harvested some Bell's yeast and have it already going in a growler I have no idea how much yeast I got out of the harvest (5 12oz bottles) or how much the starter yielded. I got the starter going this past Saturday and it...

Making starter wort, then adding yeast the next day. Doomed?

Nicely done, azscoob! Better luck next time Brewphish. A trade sounds like it could be fun. I'm pretty new to the game so not sure my product will be worth sharing.:D I'm going to give both gelatin & whirlfloc a shot. Since I'm doing BIAB there's a good likelihood that I'll have some cloudiness.

Making starter wort, then adding yeast the next day. Doomed?

The sleeper has awoken! (Geek points to anyone who can name that book/movie) Got some visible yeast activity. Airlock started bubbling just in time to keep me from messing w/ my starter. Almost cracked it open to check its gravity. Did you go with the hop additions outlined in the recipe in...

Making starter wort, then adding yeast the next day. Doomed?

@BrewPhish How'd your brew day go? I spent Friday evening harvesting some Bell's yeast. Got 5 bottles worth in 1L of wort right now. Think I could have gone w/ less wort for such a small amount of yeast. Haven't seen any airlock activity but can see a lot of yeasties in the growler. Will...

    anyone use paint.net?

Alright! Glad to hear you were able to get paint.net to work. Its not perfect but its free, which goes a long way in my book.

Making starter wort, then adding yeast the next day. Doomed?

What recipe are you doing? I'm planning to try and harvest some Bell's yeast this weekend but haven't got a good partial mash Two Hearted Ale recipe to brew it with yet. Just itching to try my hand at yeast harvesting mostly.

Recap of my first Partial Mash

I'm in agreement w/ HelperMunkee's suggestion of using the oven. I just did my first partial mash last weekend and I used my oven's "Warm & Hold" feature which kept it at/around 150. My recipe called for a mash temperature of 155 so I did have to do some stirring to drop my temperature at the...

    anyone use paint.net?

I'm pretty familiar w/ Paint.NET. Its a pretty nice upgrade from MS Paint but not as full featured as say, Photoshop. Lord Garth is correct. You need to put the image on its own layer if you would like to move them independently. Find the Layers window and click the left most button w/ the...

    Two-Hearted Ale Partial Mash

So how did this partial turn out for you, PattyC? Anything you'd do differently? I'm going to give this a go soon. I'm going to try and harvest some yeast from a few bottles. Which of course means I get to consume a few bottles of Two Hearted Ale. :mug:

    Bottle Conditioning Temps

Ok, how about this one: beers that were at room temp then plunged into the refrigerator (the beer recipient didn't know about the carbing process) and then pulled back out again. Would those bottles resume conditioning when they reached the 70ish degree range? Or would the fridge temps cause the...

    Hefeweizen Suggestions

So you had your hefe in the fermenter for 2 weeks? Bottling would not have that same quick turn around between fermenting and drinking, correct? You still need to wait a few weeks for carbonation to occur. Right? I've got an extract hefe that is wrapping up fermentation right now. I wanted...

    Tap or Spring?

I'm in the exact same boat as you. RO water brew (an IPA) is currently bottled. Tap water (a wheat bear) is bubbling away.

    The first brew...

Congrats on a successful brew! My first (an IPA) is still in the fermentor. Planning to bottle in two weeks. How was the carbonation after a week? My first brew was an extract kit. Depending on the finished product I may end up trying a mini-mash as well.
