    Easton, PA Baconfest

This weekend was the Easton PA Baconfest. The week before the fest I read on the website that they were going to have a homebrew competition for homebrewed bacon beer. I had not seen any notice of this prior. I had read the entry application and they were only going to accept ten applicants...

    Hello, heavy beer, and airlocks

Hello lgp. I've only been brewing since April, but have made 3 big brews so far, a Belgian dubbel, Scottish wee heavy, and an imperial stout. When I made the Belgian and the wee heavy I did not have the setup for making a yeast starter but I put in two containers of liquid yeast on both of...

Why are so many people letting beer sit so long??

I like to leave my beer alone and not poke or prod every day to find the moment that I hit FG to bottle. I enjoy brewing and brew and bottle nearly every week because I enjoy nearly all the aspects of brewing. I enjoy the steep, boil, additions, and the smells that I get after every step. I...

    Men who sit to pee

What does it matter how you do it as long as you get it done and enjoy the results? Ooops, forgot this was not a why don't you brew it this way thread.

How do people store beer bottles?

I store my bottles in cases. If the cases start to get ragged I ask the beer store if they have any extra empty cases, most times they are happy to get rid of them.

    Odd fermentation and repitch questions

The FG is 1.01, I'm seeing floaters that do not look like yeast rafts, and it is still gassing off after 3 weeks. I can't bottle because of the gassing, was considering racking to secondary below the floaters and give it time to grow or clean to confirm is if it is an infection. Really...

    Odd fermentation and repitch questions

took another look at the slobber. FG 1.010, and I believe I do see an infection, although it does not taste too bad at this point. Hate to say it, I think it's getting dumped. First infection, first dump.

    Odd fermentation and repitch questions

Thank you for the response Cooper. The fermenting beer is not a big beer, and I neglected to take an OG, but the extract kits stated 1.052 OG, so it should have been close. The gravity reading I took yesterday gave me a 1.000. The Wee Heavy had an OG 1.083. I'm afraid for the life of my...

    Odd fermentation and repitch questions

Hi all, love this forum. My fermentation question: I brewed a Carabou Slobber from an extract kit, using Windsor yeast. It has been in primary for 3 weeks and continues to emit gasses from my airlock about every 70 seconds. There the FG is lower than it is supposed to be, there is no...

White Labs Yeast or US-05 or Notthingham for Imperial Stout

I have an imperial stout aging in secondary (going to be my New Year Brew). I used 2 packets of Nottingham. Fermentation was crazy for three days. From what I understand, the increased alcohol content can do a number on the yeast cells, and it is best to pitch double what you would for a...

    Noob fruit addition mistake?

I actually added a pound of honey with the extract, the blueberries were just my cheapskate coming out (not wanting them to go to waste. I would have liked to save them for the secondary, but they would not make it that long. Did not add pectin or anything else.

    Noob fruit addition mistake?

I will post the results. It was a spur of the moment thing, and the now whitish blueberry swimming around , mocking me, on the top does not look appealing. Everything was boiled so no matter what it looks like, should be okay.

    Noob fruit addition mistake?

As I've read here many times, "The worst that can happen is it turns into beer."

    Noob fruit addition mistake?

Okay. I was brewing up an American wheat extract kit, and just seemed like it needed tinkering. I turned around and my wife was getting ready to throw three baskets of blueberries out. I asked her if they would keep for 2 weeks and got a negative answer. I took the three baskets and dumped...

    Brewing with coconut?

Added dry shredded coconut with 30 minutes left during the extract boil. So try to avoid any oils during racking/bottling? It sure made a great smelling wort, and I'm sure I will get less after bottling, just hoping to get a hint after conditioning.

    Brewing with coconut?

I was brewing a nut brown ale and added some shredded coconut, the smell was intoxicating. I have not seen many threads about coconut in brewing. Did I make a mistake?

    My first extract brew.....

I'm still new at this as well, and have brewed eight 5 gallon batches since March. This is my method For liquid yeast, make the starter the night before, for dry yeast I hydrate first thing. For my imperial stout I used Safeale 04, and the instructions said to sprinkle onto the wort and not...

    Bottles

A key thing to look for if you are using a hand capper, is the top of the bottle. The Sam Adams type tops are good, but Harp and Bass gave me problems with the hand capper, but work fine with the bench top.

You know you're a home brewer when?

When you can spend your lunch break admiring the temperature controller that you have been using for 15 years, now that I'm brewing I really admire that thing. or When you hand your wife a Harp and after a sip she asks, "When did they start watering down their beer."

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Brewed a Lemongrass Ginger Ale from AHS this weekend. I Told my wife to pick something, and she wanted to brew it. Wound up I brewed it and gave a lesson on extract brewing during the brew.
