    Anybody up for a riddle?

I've heard a variation on this one but not sure if you guys have posted it yet so sorry if that's the case. Same concept but you have to identify if the odd ball is heavier or lighter. You have 12 balls and 3 uses of the scale.

    Filtering Beer - Extract

Knox unflavored gelatin works for me but it really helps if the beer is cold when you add it. I've read it works at room temp but that it takes longer

heating element to maintain HLT temp

The heat stick with a temp controller is a good option. I used to do that and it worked great. If you aren't familiar with building electrical circuits you could buy something like this http://www.auberins.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=44 It doesn't have PID control though...

    Filtering Beer - Extract

I wouldn't suggest filtering prior to bottling. You would likely oxidise the beer pretty heavily. If anything, look into using some finings in the fermentor after fermentation is complete.

Keeping exact temperature control during fermentation

If you put a fan in your chamber it will certainly help. With stagnant air you could have very different temperatures througout your chamber. Get the air moving around and you will see much better results. It will cause your compressor to cylce more often though which to some is too much of a...

Why is my beer getting darker with age?

If i were to bottle again i would go straight from primary to the bottle and skip the bucket. Use carbonation tabs in each bottle instead of mixing in corn sugar. This way you limit oxygen uptake as much as possible.

Chest Freezer with temp controller vs mini fridge fermentation chamber

Id go with the freezer for sure. I have 2 chest freezers i use for temp control. They are much more versatile.

    Efficiency too high?

Bitter in a weird way i guess. It overpowered hop character for sure. Now that i know what it tastes like i realize its not the first time i have overcarbed. Pour a pint and whisk away the co2 as it warms. Easy test..

    Slow wort transfer to primary

Yeah.. you will have more break material which could clog your bazooka screen. You might want to consider removing it.

    Efficiency too high?

There are definitely people out there who recommend to set it and forget it over force carbing. It may work for most people but may not with your equipment and procedures. What temp range does your beer fridge run at? Also, consider that your pressure gauge could be out of calibration which...

    Mashout and Sparging temp questions

You are correct that you want to bring the grain temp to 168 with your "batch sparge". I dont know your grain bill but usually 180 to 185 is necessary. Dont worry about mashing out when batch sparging. Hot side aeration? Who knows.. just by a longer hose.

Pump I found on Craigslist. Is it safe?

It is food safe and will withstand boiling temps. I have three iwakis and they are great. They are much quieter than the other pumps mentioned above. They are made from polypropylene.

    condo loft brewery conversion

Thank you. I didnt have to poke any holes in any extetior walls or roof. The adjacent room houses the HVAC system and all the other vents for the bathrooms and dryer. There were already a few large roof vents in that room to use.

    condo loft brewery conversion

I went with a pretty simple method for inserting the TCs. While a little janky, its cheap, simple, and works really well.

    condo loft brewery conversion

Mash tun and HLT. I put a float switch in the HLT to protect the heating element.

    condo loft brewery conversion

Still not "done" but getting there. Like most projects it will be a continuous work in progress.

Wort chiller leaked tap water into brew

That happened to me once. Turned to to be one of my best batches.

    starting on a new controller

Check out the electric brewery if you havent already. He uses a 120 volt selector switch to control solenoids which provide the high voltage. I would recommend though to use double pull double throw solenoids so that you can cut off all power to the elements when not in use rather than just one...

    Electric element mounted in plastic

The wattage shouldnt matter. If the plastic can withstand 212 deg F you are good to go.
