    Pliny the Elder recipe questions

The sparge is approximately 1.5 quarts. At the end of the boil, after cooling, add the top off water to bring it up to 5.25 Gal in your primary fermentor. The Chinook are FWH (first wort hops in grain bag). And yes wlp california001 is the way to go. You can make a starter to save dinero...

    Pliny the Elder recipe questions

Don't know if it helps, but this is the way I made it before going all grain. Brewed about 20 gallons of this stuff since then. Always a favorite. Here's the mini mash:Bring 2.5 gal water to 160, Turn off heat. In a muslin bag, add the following. Mash @approx 155 for 45 min. Sparge with...

    Imperial Stout Double-W Imperial Stout

Same as above. Got a great small stout out of the 2nd runnings. Bottled and drank it all quick. Nice nutty flavor. Just tapped the big stout after 9 mos. aging. Its good but will get better with time. Strong stuff so watch out!

    Pliny the Elder recipe questions

This is completely normal for this beer. It should strip a few layers off your tongue and throat when its "green" It will subside, and you will appreciate its unique flavors and alcoholic punch. (just a 22 for me and I'm done) I brew this twice a year, and not many people can actually drink...

Where does everyone get their grains and hops??

Check out your local brewpub. I pay$32 for a sack of TF Marris Otter. They might even sell you bulk hops too! Throw back a few pints and see what they say.

    Imperial Stout Double-W Imperial Stout

This tends to be on the sweeter side of stouts with the large amount of unfermentables and high OG. Mine ended around 1.026-1.028. A sipper for sure, and blends well if you fancy.

    Does this look normal?

It's fine. Did 20 Gal assorted Hefe-raspberry, blueberry, etc for summertime. Looks like the same sticky wheat mess i had. It will fall.....eventually. A gentle swirl after a few weeks in Primary will also help. Love the Hefe!

    Imperial Stout Double-W Imperial Stout

Just kegged this beast after bulk aging for 6 months. It is a beautiful dark brown with a golden Carmel hue when in the light. Poured myself a nice snifter to sip throughout the afternoon. Nice chocolate flavor with a hint off coffee rounded off with some sherry bourbon notes as well. I...

stalled yeast in high gravity beer

This is a great accomplishment for the yeaties! They have served you well! I did r2eng's "Double W RIS" OG 1.104 and had a stalled fermentation around 1.056 after 7 days of vigorous ferm/blowoff. I had used 2 packs of US-05, repitched some S-33 with some amylase, and got it down to 1.026...

    Best All Grain day EVER!

Hi, do you have a High Pressure regulator? I've used those burners from Marcus and they throw a ton of heat. I switched to banjo burners just because I like to be extreme and over the top.

Grain storage - Life Latch Ultimate Pail

Vittles Vaults for me! Stackable and airtight. Good piece of mind. Luckily no bugs so far. One for 2-row/Marris, one for wheat, and one for pilsner. ( Luckily I get my sacks at a local brewery who always have a fresh rotation of grain )All the specialty grains go in Foodsaver jars or bags...

    Possible Stout infection...

Looks like yeasties to me. How long since the krausen has dropped? I've had stouts continue churning long after the krausen has dropped. What was your original recipe?

    Pliny the Elder recipe questions

Put a nylon hop bag, or whatever you use around your racking cane Should be able to get every last drop! Works for me every time! Also, this is my favorite IIPA and it NEVER lasts long.

Did I screw up my 2nd all gain

Search for "double-W RIS" I made this and pulled a huge RIS (1st) and then a small quaffable stout with the "2nd" runnings. The small stout is all gone and the RIS is in a long resting stage......

    Imperial Stout Double-W Imperial Stout

Made this back in early May, also made a small stout from the 2nd runnings. Came out about 3.5% ABV. Needless to say is was delicious and we ripped through it in a hurry. Will be doing a tasting and gravity reading later today from secondary. Will post results later. Thanks for the great...

    Fuggles for Williamette? 911

Cool, thanks for the millisecond reply. Just don't want to ruin a big batch. Just fought a huge boil over and lost the battle and about 1 oz of hops and 1 gallon of wort. Just chucked an extra ounce of Mittlefruh (sp?) in. Should be cool though. Time to look for a bigger boil kettle. ;)

    Fuggles for Williamette? 911

Hello all. Just started the boil for 10 gal of rasp/apricot wheat. Have my Hallerteau Hersbrucker for bittering, but just opened my Williamette and they are not bright green and fresh, but a little on the brownish/greyish? side of things and don't have a good aroma. Its not bad, but not what...
