    Conicals made the US

That seems quite excessive on the headspace. I've only had one instance where I needed a blowoff tube and that was because of a miscalculated starting gravity from fresh pears I was using. I have never had to have a 60/40 split for fermentation headspace. To me that sounds like a waste of good...

Funny things you've overheard about beer

So this wasn't my story, but homebrewing came up at a Bell's Hopslam cask tasting. "My buddy does homebrewing, but his family only drinks icehouse. One time he brought a growler to share and after giving them tasters and them obviously not liking it he was drinking the growler on his own. After...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Possibility of brewing this weekend... Possibly my first All Grain brew. SWMBO agreed to purchasing an all grain kit today with the tax return.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

The plan for this weekend is to bottle the imperial blonde and transfer the cherry wheat to secondaries. The cherry wheat was warmed up from 60 degrees to 70 degrees over the weekend to clean up any remaining sugars the yeast hadn't munched on yet.

Looking to borrow a conical or other large fermentation vessel

So an update on how the beer is going. Checked the gravity last weekend and this morning. Gravity read 1.012 both times. I was hoping for a slightly lower final reading. So to be sure of the temp it was fermenting at I checked. Temp of beer sitting steady at 60 f. That's the low end of ideal...

Funny things you've overheard about beer

A couple friends, my SWMBO, and I went to the improv last weekend. We asked the waiter what they had (not much of course) but had a seasonal that I hadn't heard of before. So I asked him what was like. His reply: "well it's a lager ale, not all that dark, not all that light, it's a bit hoppy...

time to play the "can you name this style by the pictures" game.

Oak barrel aged stout with milk and coffee
  13. Renegades_Brew

how long did it take you to get good?

I'll say 1.5... granted I only can do partial mash as I don't have enough room for all grain yet. The reason 1.5 is my first batch was a whiskey stout. While I didn't consider it that great, others were loving it. My second batch was my first time cherry wheat that I completely flubbed when I...

Looking to borrow a conical or other large fermentation vessel

That's the plan. Once primary fermentation is done I will be transferring to 5/6 vessels (cherries probably going to keep a couple gallons from me) for secondary conditioning. Oh. And I forgot to mention the type of cherries: Door County tart pie cherries. 50 lbs of them in that bin.

Looking to borrow a conical or other large fermentation vessel

The "high Krausen ring" was really just from the agitation from pouring the 5 buckets in. They only had just started their fermentation last night so a little more aeration shouldn't hurt. (i'm hoping) The lid is far from air tight. But with the winter the way it is currently and the lack of...
