    Planning my setup...thoughts?

It would be interesting to have some statistics on the hobby of homebrewing including how many people stick with the hobby, how many increase and decrease their brewing with time, how many gradually expand their production capacity, etc. etc.. From the volume of used brewing equipment for sale...

All Rounder - using Spunding Valve in lieu of Blow Off tube

I suspect that the "Hop Bong" is a nice device but I have been reluctant to spend $150+ for the devise for the $80 All Rounder. I have had my All Rounder for a couple years now and had issues maintaining good seals on it. I have to be very careful tightening all the components to the exact...

All Rounder - using Spunding Valve in lieu of Blow Off tube

I always brew my NEIPA's under pressure at 10-12 psi in my All Rounder. I initially use the released CO2 to push sanitizer out of my kegs to fill my kegs with CO2. I then dry hop with hop bags suspended with Sous Vide magnets on the inside of the fermenter and then carefully drop and later...

    Dried or fresh hops?

I don't know much about commercial leaf hops but I used them once in an IPA recipe and the hop debris was a real nuisance. I was plugging up my transfer hoses, siphon hoses, etc.. I have never used anything but hop pellets after that experience.

    Inkbird swings

I think insulating the whole fermenter (or my kegs after fermentation) reduces the cycling of the refrigerator. It takes longer to cool the vessels down but then after the refrigerator shuts off and the temperature inside slowly drops, the vessels retain their temperature longer allowing the...

    Inkbird swings

Agree with this. The probe works best with the one fermenter That I use with an internal thermal well so the probe is right inside the fermenting beer. The next best option is to tape it to the outside of the fermenter as mentioned above with insulation over the top of it. I even bought a...

Do you need to aerate your wort if you pitch a yeast starter in it?

It takes me 1 min to oxygenate my wort and 10 minutes to read through this thread discussing whether to do it or not. It seems like a no brainer to just oxygenate it.

I hate my auto-siphon SO much!!!

For what it is worth, I finally spent a little more money to get this stainless auto siphon which I can manage easily with 2 hands. I clamp the stainless tube to the side of my boil kettle when transferring to my fermenters and then I even use a plastic tie wrap to secure the clamp to the lift...

    BIAB VS All-In-One System

That would be a no-brainer place to spend money next for me.

Stir the Mash on an All-Grain Brew?

Not sure what you are using for your "pot." I use a cheap Igloo cooler with a false bottom and first add 1-2 gallons of hot water to the cooler at about 160-170 degrees for 10-15 min to heat up the cooler before I add my strike water and grains. Then after the initial stirring to prevent any...

How Does my Well Water Sound?

I spend about $7 to buy RO water for each 5 gal batch that I brew. I then start with a clean slate and adjust my water profile for the style of beer that I am brewing. For the 3-4 batches I brew every year, this is cheap. If you want to take your brewing up a notch by using the proper water...

My glass stove-top sucks, looking for heating/boil upgrades (cheaper = better)

If I was brewing and boiling 5 gal batches inside, I would need to worry as much about the ventilation system as I would the heat source. I would need a commercial quality range hood vent for both the smell and the steam / moisture. I would rather just brew quickly outside with a super hot gas...

NEIPA…to brew or not to brew

It doesn't have to be that expensive to do oxygen free brewing. I bought a fairly cheap pressure capable fermenter, a spunding valve, a keg (used kegs are available), a cheap mini refrigerator that holds the keg, etc.. I think I would stick with easier beers to brew or just spend the money to...

    Pre-pressurizing Pressure-Fermented Lagers?

I don't think it matters either way but I usually pressurize my fermenter to the desired pressure just to dial in my spunding valve to the correct pressure right away.

does all grain beer taste better than extract? or is it just an experience thing?

A 5 gal batch takes me about 4 1/2 - 5 hours including clean up. I often do two 5 gal batches overlapping in the same day as long as I have all my equipment out and this takes me about 7 1/2 - 8 hours (which means the beer then last me twice as long).

    Regarding cleaning

I wouldn't "clean" that auto siphon again but I would definitely run sanitizer through it right before I used it which just takes a minute or so.

Sugar + Water + yeast seems to have no alcohol

This is kind of funny. I think you just wasted what little time you had. LOL

Oxygenated the wort probably among other mistake. Don't know the best way to handle it.

I have gotten to the point where I just forget about doing gravity readings and just leave my beers in the airtight fermenter for 2 weeks before I keg it. There is no reason for me to try to rush the process and the beers taste better with no oxygen exposure and more aging anyway. I have never...

    Northern Brewer - Buyer Beware

I havre been getting good service and fast shipping recently from Northern Brewer. No complaints at all. I don't care who owns them as long as they have good products and deliver them quickly.

Best strategy for doing a closed transfer with a huge dry hop?

I have an All Rounder and a stainless fermenter and I almost always use the All Rounder. I like to be able to see inside the fermenter especially when I am doing closed transfers. I can see exactly where my floating dip tube is drawing beer from and can even move it around by shaking the...
