2nd Attempt at Fly Sparging & low efficiency -- Feedback Needed

Thanks again! Stoked already for the next brew!

2nd Attempt at Fly Sparging & low efficiency -- Feedback Needed

Thanks guys. I use a 15 gallon stainless kettle with a false bottom and round sparge arm. I did not do a mash out (I'm not really even sure how to do that). I was heating the sparge water to about 175 and pumping up to the sparge arm (I am probably losing a few degrees in the transfer too)...

2nd Attempt at Fly Sparging & low efficiency -- Feedback Needed

I've been AG brewing for about 1.5 years, but always batch sparged in a 10 gallon cooler with great results. My rig is now set up for fly sparging with March 809 pump and today was my second brew on the new system. I only hit about 55% efficiency and an OG of 1.036, when it should have...

BeerSmith Help --- Dead space in mash tun

I have been using version 1.4 of BeerSmith for a little while and since moving from a 10 gal rubbermaid cooler with false bottom to 15 gallon stainess with false bottom, I cannot figure out how to get BeerSmith to account for the "dead space" field when creating an Equipment Profile. I am...

Oregon Honey Beer - looking for recipe

Anyone out there know where I might dig up a recipe for Oregon Honey Beer? I haven't been able to find any in my local bottle shops for a while and want to brew it. I think it's brewed by MacTarnahan's Brewery...

Need Advice - High Attenuation & Low FG 1.002

You guys were right. Went to double check. Hydrometer came in at 1.006 and calibrated refractometer came in at 5.50 brix = 1.007.

Need Advice - High Attenuation & Low FG 1.002

Thanks Jon & CP. I'll go back and double check for sure.

Need Advice - High Attenuation & Low FG 1.002

Well, I actually tried to fly sparge for the first time with water at 168 F. This is my 4th AG batch and thought to try fly. No formal mash out. Sounds like that might have been an issue and the mash was still converting?

Need Advice - High Attenuation & Low FG 1.002

Sounds like the recipe looks alright. Haven't tasted it yet, so that variable still needs to be checked. I calibrated my refractometer just before checking FG, and then plugged reading into Beer Smith to adjust for presence of alcohol. I did not calibrate before checking OG.

I fermented in temp controlled environment at 65 F.

Need Advice - High Attenuation & Low FG 1.002

I just kegged a blonde ale and it finished at 1.002. I calculated an approximate apparent attenuation of 95%. I'm looking for some advice on what might have gone sideways to bring this beer so low and dry. Too much 2 row? Too low mash temp? Probobly a combination of several factors...

    Harvesting, Re-pitching & Washing

    Killer ideas/tips, etc. Thanks guys.

    Harvesting, Re-pitching & Washing

I just harvested WLP Cal Ale from a blonde ale. I have it in a mason jar. My question is when, if at all is the best time to wash the yeast? 1. Now, then refigerate and pitch the right amount on next brew day? 2. Refrigerate now and wait until the next brew day? I plan to use JZ's...

    Over Carbonation in Keg

Two weeks ago I filled my first keg and while trying to figure out the right amount of psi to force carb along with a lack of patience, I think I over carbed the beer? I get about 90% foam when dispensing -even at very low psi (2-3). The method I used was to crank it to 30 psi and shook it...

Wort fermenting before I pitched starter. Wild yeast? Should I be concerned?

This is the fist time I have encountered this and I didn't find any posts about it, so maybe it's not a big deal. I brewed an american pale ale yesterday afternoon. Waited 24 hrs to allow the wort to cool to the best temperature to pitch 1.7 liter starter of white labs cal ale. Went to...

Single Infusion Batch Sparge – How to handle this line up?

I have only done a couple AG batches, but none that called for “mash at 122 for 15 minutes, then raise the temperature over the next 15 minutes to 154 and hold until conversion is complete.” My question is: I use a 10 gallon cooler and batch sparge. Since I can’t fire...

First AG brew! Missed the OG!?

Thanks Munche. I always appreciate the insight I get from HBT!

First AG brew! Missed the OG!?

Learning I am doing for sure. So, if my efficiency was 55% on this brew, does that mean my efficiency will always be approx. 55% and I should adjust recipes accordingly, like in Beer Smith?

First AG brew! Missed the OG!?

Thanks Yoop. Sounds like not much I could have done just by following the recipe and not knowing much about the grain line up. Is it possible to get it up a bit by adding sugar to the carboy? I haven't pitched my starter yet. Or, would you just say stick with what I got?

First AG brew! Missed the OG!?

After going through the calculations from How to Brew, my efficiency was just 55%. For a first time AG brew, this sounds extremely low. Here is the recipe I used: 6# 2 row 2# Flaked barley 2 # Munich 1 # Black Patent malt .5 carapils The local home brew shop I decided to by the...
