+1 on the dip tube. Here is my false bottom with dip tube and I have barely any liquid in my MLT after its drained.

I actually lose very little. Maybe a quart in the chiller and a quart under my false bottom. I actually lose just as much due to my hoses as I do that's left in the chiller.

If you're going to sweat the fittings, just add threaded fittings like this and limit the number of clamps you use. Mine hasn't leaked a drop of wort or water.

I've never seen anyone put that amount down as a deposit on a keg. It's usually like $60-$80 which would not pay for that keg.

You can find them the right way (buy from somewhere that obtained the kegs legally) or the wrong way which is usually how people get them (Craigslist, etc. ). If people just put a deposit down and never return the keg it's still property of the brewery. The breweries will decommission the kegs...

Use the copper to make a counterflow chiller. Mine goes from 212 degrees to 80 or cooler as fast as the pump will pump it.

Save yourself some money and buy a hop spider for the boil kettle. They aren't as expensive and will control all the hop gunk you can throw at it. Check out NorCal brewing.
