Yea exactly that's what I was thinking. The recipe was kinda thrown together when I found it so I was guessing they wanted me to raise the temp by adding water. What would be the result if I did keep it at 1/1 for the entire mash?

Yea making sure it is the right level is a problem without peeking. I have seen some people put a float shut-off valve so when it goes too low it open the water valve, but like OneHoppyGuy said you don't have to worry about that unless your going to sparge with it.

Yea I needed that fitting too and got it at HD. I have really warm tap water here in CC Texas and have to run my hose to a garbage can full of ice and use one of those connections along the way. Hope you find what ya need

Did you use bleach/clorox to clean the inside of the fridge? I had a very similar experience to what you are describing and I think it was some kind of reaction with the walls of the freezer.

Yea I tried seeing about the barb fitting too, but they don't sell any. Re-threading the thing seems too drastic and it is probably too thin for that.
